So I now have my 12" Lukebox, and an amp, and thought I had a sub, but it turns out that it's going not to work out. Sooo, I'm officially in the market for a new sub! Fun fun!
The box should be well known here, but in case anyone has forgotten it's got 2.12cuft volume (gross), dual 3" ports tuned to 32hz, and I'm guessing around 6.5" mounting depth.
The amp I'm using is a Hifonics Brutus BRX5016.5 with a 5th channel supposedly rated at 750 watts RMS@ 2ohms. Specs can be found here: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...BRX5016.5.html
Budget for the sub is ~$200. looking for SQL... something mainly geared towards SQ, but with some SPL to back it up when I'm looking to show off the system. I'd say 70% SQ and 30% SPL. Also needs to run at 2 ohms, so likely a 4 ohm DVC setup. Also should be able to have roughly 750 watts RMS run into it, so I'd like something that is rated to handle close to that.
Using StereoInstaller1's suggestions on sub selection in another thread and some searching I have come up with general parameters for what would fit well:
Budget: ~$200
Qts: <.42
Fs: <30
Xmax: >10mm
Voice Coil: >or=2.5"
Sensitivity: Higher is better
Ported Box Recommendations: 1.5-2.0cuft tuned to ~32Hz
Mounting Depth: ~<6.5"
Power Handling: ~500-750 watts RMS
With a good amount of searching I have whittled the list down to basically 2 subs, although they each have their on pluses and minuses. They are as follows:
Dayton Audio Reference HO: http://www.daytonaudio.com/index.php...subwoofer.html
* Fs: 21.5
* Qts: .37
* Xmax: 14mm
* Sensitivity: 84.6dB
* RMS power handling: 700 watts
* Ported Box Recommendations: 1.36cuft @27Hz
* Voice coil: 2.5"
* Impedance: DVC's 4 ohms each
The main drawbacks are the relatively low Xmax and sensitivity, but it has the advantage of high RMS power handling.
Image Dynamics ID12 D4 V.4: http://www.imagedynamicsusa.net/specsheets/ID12D4V4.pdf
* Fs: 20.9
* Qts: .36
* Xmax 17mm
* Sens 88.6
* 400w RMS
* Ported Box Recommendations: 2.0cu at 30-32hz
* Impedance: DVC's 4 ohms each
In a lot of ways this sub has better specs, but I can't find anything on voice coil size and I worry it's power handling is low. I've found differing figures of its power handling abilities, including 250 watts RMS being a high end figure.
Just looking to get people's opinions and perhaps suggestions of other subs that may fit the bill. May even be willing to go somewhat above the $200 cap if a good case is made!
From what I've read in terms of reviews, it seems like people are pretty much evenly split on which produces better SQ, however no one seems to mention which will hit harder. I think given the relatively equivalent reviews, I may simply be persuaded by the higher SPL numbers. Any help/opinions/recommendations/reviews would be greatly appreciated!
