Rear defrost not getting power on the passenger side

    Hi all,

The rear defrost isn't working in my 1989 325iX sedan. I've used a multimeter to test out the grid on the rear window, and it seems to have good continuity from one side to the other. I've also pulled off the electrical tabs that connect to each side and tested those tabs, but there seems to be a problem.

On the driver's side, the multimeter indicates a good connection. On the passenger side, however, the multimeter doesn't indicate any kind of connection. It seems that the line simply isn't connected to anything on the passenger side.

I've tried to trace the line to see if there's any kind of break in the wire, or a relay in the middle that could've failed, but there doesn't seem to be one in the wiring diagram. That line from the passenger side of the grid goes down beside the rear dash, then runs under the speaker and toward the center brake light. I can't see where it goes after that.

Is it possible that there's a break between in that line before it gets to the rear defrost switch? Or, is it more likely that the rear defrost switch itself is bad? The rear defrost switch lights up as it should, both with the lights (low backlight) and when depressed (brighter backlight) - but again there is no power arriving to that passenger side tab where it connects to the defrost grid.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,
    Justin

    Did you test to ground?

Yessir. The multimeter indicated a good connection to ground.
