    Dual Sub? or bigger amp?

I think I'm on the right path but wanted to run this by you guys.
Right now I'm running a mono sub with a stereo amp bridged but not getting enough bass due to my cabrio frame structure. My amp has plenty of juice but don't want to run it hard and hot. my 2 options:
    (1) going with a bigger amp and keep mono sub (this is the more $$$ route).
    (2) Get a second matching sub and run my current amp in stereo wich will be suffecient to run 2 subs I believe (this is the more affordable route).

I'm leaning more towards option 2.

current set up includes Xplode 2ch amp and 10" MTX sub (my beloved Image Dynamics is R.I.P :( ).

    Thank you in advance.

Sean, (BTW, welcome to R3V!) if you go from 1 to 2 subs, all else being equal, you will only gain about 3db. If you build the best possible enclosure, you could probably gain about 10 to 12db...think about that.

A 10db gain is the SAME as going from 100 watts to 1000 watts.

Which woofer do you have? Most MTX are DVC, and if so, you would be better served by a SVC or a dual 2 ohm sub.

All "Xplod" Sony amps want to see 2 ohms per channel, so a 2 channel amp wants to see 4 ohms mono.

    Physics rock.

      Luke,

Thank you for the warm welcome.
I'm not sure which MTX i bought but my heart was so broken over my IDQ10 that i felt a bit of rage against spending any big $$$ so i got this MTX at a close out for $60

This MTX is SVC (I'm assuming that stands for single voice coil?) so it's a standard 4 ohm most likely.

would connecting (2) 4 ohm SVC subs (series or paralelle???) bring me up to 8 ohms or down to 2 ohm? if it brings me to 2 ohms than maybe I can connect them that way to my Xplode as mono bridged?

I can not grasp the difference between 3 db or 10 db, but if I can double the bass by adding another sub and keeping everything else as is, I'd be happy

      Thanks a bunch

      Sean

Getting bass into the cabin of a cabrio is tough. I have seen a person on E30.de that used 2 10" subwoofers that were enclosed in a bandbass box.

The port of the bandpass was directed into the cabin through a hole he cut through the double steel plates behind the back seat.

I did the same thing with my system, however I was very reluctant to cut any steel off of a car that flexes alot already. but i ended up cutting a ~5"x5" square through the center exiting where the seat belt holder is located.

If the box is built properly and to specs of your woofers, It should sound quite a bit better and louder than just having a sealed box sitting your trunk.

I have two dual voice coil RF 10" subs in a sealed box in my cabrio and it can pound harder than necessary. You don't need to cut or mod anything, just build a nice box, get some good subs and a decent amp and you'll be set.

Spend the dough on a correct box and set up or going with more power and a DVC woofer.

Well, I opted for 2 subs and keep my current amp. I returned the MTX sub that I had purchased 3 weeks ago and bought a pair of these last night
              http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/MTX-T...oductDetail.do
These are one step higher then the single one I returned. Notice Circuit City is running a special on these, Buy one, get one free  I installed one of them in my existing box just to have some bass till I build a dual sub box, I've notice a drastic improvement already just by using this sub compared to the previous MTX. The improvement is almost enough to keep it as as but since I have a pair, I'm going to put them in and reduce the stress on the amp a bit.
Any thoughts, comments and/or opinions are welcome.

              Thanks
              Sean

I have the same issue... I can get some bass into the cabin while parked or at very low speeds. As soon as I hit 45 mph can't hear any bass.

Is putting a huge box in the trunk the only solution? How about a smaller box with tons of power to drive it? I've even thought about putting a bazooka sub / tube in the backseat.

Anyone have any reasonable success with a moderately sized enclosure (1 or 2 subs) and no cutting into the cabin? What kind of power is required.

Sean, back to the basics. You have a 2 channel amp. That amp, like most other car amps, wants to see 2 ohms PER CHANNEL.

Go return those woofers and get 2 dual voice coil woofers, with 4 ohms per coil. This is your only logical option at CC.

Double your current power, without overheating or shutting off, for free.

                    Luke,

Thank you for the guidance, I will return those MTXs back unless someone from the board is interested in them.
                    I just won these, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=015
I hope they're going to fit back there
