I recently purchased a 1986 325e and found this wire unplugged in my engine bay with no sign as to what it plugs into, any help? There are two pictures attached

Bright orange on these cars usually means "Airbag". If I'm not mistaken, I believe I've seen the same wire on my car as well. As your '86 and my '87 are early models they did not come equipped with airbags as standard. It is possible this could be a wiring provision the factory put there for some reason. I think the sensors for the late model cars w/ airbag sit on top of the fender wells nearby. Someone with a late model car may be able to confirm this.
That said - I wouldn't worry about it.-Geno

Don't worry about it. They added a lot of options that they could plug in. That is just the plug for an option you don't have.
