how much wire to leave on tweeter pod?

i am planning on removing tweeters from a car and then transferring to another e30, but it will be in an i. should i just leave a good amount of wire in order to make them functional in the other car, or is there a plug somewhere in the door that i should just unplug and remove the tweeter and wire to the plug?

any help would be great, thanks.

I would just cut them up close and run new wire to the head unit. That way it won't matter how much wire you have and you'll have new GOOD wire run to them.

I believe the wires are soldered onto the tweeters, so if you have a soldering iron, just unsolder them. I don't think there are plugs/connectors anywhere.

AFAIK, all e30's are wired for tweeters. My son's '85 e is, I was suprised.

All of the e30 tweets I have seen were plugged in.

remember, you must run a crossover on those tweets. The stock crossover is on the factory mid, that is why the tweeter is plugged into the mid.

my '90 i (normal sound, not premium) has wiring for tweets if that helps. there's connectors sitting right behind the mirror sails.

ok, so three people have said that all are wired for them... then there are some that say i must wire it myself.

i took the sail off and the only thing i saw was the mirror adjusting wires... but perhaps the wiring just fell down a bit into the door or something.... regardless i will have to look again because it got too dark and too late, i had to leave to join a lil study group.

but i will check and get back to you... oh, and btw, what is the "mid" that you speak of? just a plug receptor?

to be honest i will probably have to be walked through all the wiring because i am a complete noob when it comes to car audio wiring and i havent been able to find a diy on it.

          edit: i also have a '90 i...

Mike, "mid" is short for Midrange, the 5.25" in the kickpanel. The premium sound mid has a crossover built in.

Crossovers send the appropriate signal to the appropriate "driver", which is what the industry calls a "speaker"

Thanks, man. OT, I am thinking of opening a trade school to teach aspiring installers to work in this dreadful industry!

My 84 318 wasn't prewired. Do most mids already have the crossover built into it? Mine didn't.

thanks for trying to explain, but i am so noobish at this whole audio wiring game that it still didnt make sense to me!!

as far as the tweeter wires go, yes they were on my car. they just werent located directly behind the sails, they were hidden in the door (and ziptied down on my passenger side) so you just have to look for them.

i plugged them in (as the wires have lil plug thingies at the end that plug into the back of the tweeter) and installed them on the door.... the only thing now is that they are still not functional.

jordan was helping me trouble shoot it, and was saying some of the same terms you were just throwing out at me/us (like the 'crossover' and stuff like that lol) but i just told him that i think i'm just going to leave it for when my entire sound system gets done in my car.

he mentioned something about whether or not i had gotten my hands on premium kick panel speakers (i think something to do with them having a device that doesnt let too much power go to the tweeters that'll blow them out in a short period of time --- so i assume some kind of resistor device coil thing)...

                    thanks for the help guys.

edit: as for the poster above me, i was told that 86+ come prewired.... so that may answer your quesion, maybe :)

edit2: just reread you post luke (i'm guessing thats your name lol) and it seems that device i was talking about is the same as the 'crossover' you are talking about. correct me if i'm wrong.

edit3(last edit i swear lol): i forgot to ask anybody, but do i need to get an amp from a premium sound e30? i am assuming no because no one has mentioned it yet, but just wondering to know for sure... as i'm gathering that it is just being wired directly from the kick panel speakers.

                      Mike, you are so close.

First, understand it is not power you are concerned with, but frequencies.

Crossovers allow only "tweeter frequencies" through, protecting them from smoking.

Here is what to do: go to your local independent car stereo shop with $20 in your wallet.

                      Make sure it is 1 $10 and 2 $5's.

Do NOT go into the store, but go into the install bays. Ask the oldest guy you see if he might have some crossovers he might want to part with. All of us old guys have shit like this laying around...If he says $50, tell him you were thinking more like $10...remember, he got them free.

If he says $10, give him $15 because he is cool.

Worst case, $20 should get you a pair of crossovers.

When you get them, post here. I will walk you through the rest.

Although, I bet you won't need any more help.

Oh yeah, Ken, only premium front mids have the crossovers built in.

Don't wire your tweets w/o crossovers... You will screw them for sure.
