The stock one is a POS large enough to fly a flag off of.

So that is what the S2K antenna will look like? That's the best example pic I've seen, found other threads on the S2K one, but no pics of finished product. Looks like I'm going to go that route. Did you buy the whole S2K antenna? What extra wiring is needed?

I wonder then, how the shorter antennas are able to recieve the freqs with sufficient clarity? There's a sacrafice for shorter length, it's probably a rubber ducky inside.

I would rather have a in-window antenna than a S2000 or similar antenna. Keeps the car line clean.

Get a Z3/318ti antenna base and a stubby one like this one for looks. The longer stock antenna is better for reception, but this one works well enough (I have no problems with local stations).

                  Z3 stock:

Do you mean the antenna portion or the antenna base? I didn't mount the antenna base on anything, the antenna base is very light and is very stable mounted in the new grommet.

The antenna itself. The base that's on the antenna I have is too big and it's totally flat, so it won't mount on the car correctly, it sticks out to the side at an angle. I need to get one of the stock E30 mounting grommets, and mount the antenna part inside the mounting grommet so it fits straight on the car.

This is my antenna, it was in the trunk of the last parts car I bought. I don't know what kind it is or what it's from, but it's only about 1 3/4" tall. I just need to separate it from that large round base it's in now, and fit it into an E30 mounting base.

Here it is with the big round base removed:

Is the inner diameter of the e30 grommet the same as that antenna? That should look good once it is installed.

I really like the stubby one, it is only an inch long. It barely sticks up more than the top part of the old retractable antenna that was on the car when I got it. Works better, too. I think the Z3318ti antenna mod was well worth it. The writeup over at e30tech was really helpful, I think it took me a half hour to an hour to do everything. The base isn't too expensive when you get it from a junkyard, either.

The stock Z3 antenna makes the car look like a RC car. Which is kind of cool, but not as cool as the stubby one.

It might be a bit smaller, but I should be able to make a shim or something to get it to fit properly.

Bumping an old ass thread but how did Mr 325 have the s2k antenna sitting on the car properly without pointing outwards? Or can you somehow just make it work without buying another grommet or something?
