sub with out a box..are there woofers are made for it???

I'm really don't want to weigh my car down with a havy sub box, and I don't need super strong bass...

Can decent sound be had my punching out the ski hole, and using the trunk as a enclosure? Are there woofers that are made for this situation?

    Thanks!

    george,

what are you going to attach the sub to? Or are you going to just use the magnet on the woofer to attach it to the body's sheetmetal?

    :-D

Kicker makes free-woofers. But, as Kris stated, how do you plan on mounting it?

He could mount it like the front of any normal box. Then have the sides top and bottom be the trunk, and then the back be another sheet of MDF.

        OR

If its not like my setup.

The front of the box would house the sub and be MDF then the rest of the trunk would be the box.

        Sold it.

no you cant make your trunk into an enclosure and free air subs sound like shit.

find a good woofer designed for small sealed enclosures such as
          elemental designs
          resonant engineering
          adire

Yea, I did this on my e21, and it worked (just)ok - too boomy(is that the word) - All I can say is that at one point I had 2 long throw 12" (the girls loved to sit in the back seat - wounder what's that about...)

On, I was thinking of attaching the sub to some MDF board about an inch wider and taller than the ski pass hole, and attach it to the back of the trunk and then attach the woffer to it.

The reason for all of this is weight of course.

The 10" kappa perfect and MBW DVC woofers are designed for like1-2sq ft boxes IIRC

Can I ask why you're so concerned about adding a little bit of extra weight?

The solobarics will fit in a .75 cubic foot box.

nowhere near as much as the subwoofer itself.

If you dont need that much bass why dont you just get some 8's or 10's.
I have a solobaric 12 and my box isnt heavy

A decent box out of .75" MDF will be about 10 lbs or so.

I just stuck a 8" powered Kenwood sub and amp in my trunk, It's only 1.5' long and fits pretty nicely in the back left Corner. right now I've got it tied to my strut bar to keep it from Sliding around my trunk, there is still plenty of room to slide a Suitcase and a large bag in the trunk. Plus it sounds pretty good. As the box was designed for the sub.

If you want a sub that uses free air (no box), they are called infinate baffel subs. I don't think elemental designs makes one, but some of the other upper end companies do. Check out caraudioforum.com

another option is two six by nines in the back, and run them off of an amp.
it will be much louder than you think.
