You would be better off building FG kick panels. By sticking driver's in the door you are shortening path lengths between drivers and you ears. If you do that you would probably want tweeters close to your midrange.

On the other hand if you properly deaden/seal doors, they can act as an enclosure for the mid.

So it all boils down to what size of driver you want and what are your main goals. If you're after clean/stealth install- door install would be the way to go. If you're after proper staging and overall sound quality and balance, I'd build kick panels if I were you.

lol, sorry I've been MIA from the thread.

yes, I did make them myself. it took a friend and I about 20 hours total (with design and FG drying).

There is a 'skeleton' of mdf, and then we wrapped a sheet around it and painted the FG on.

Because of the grills on the speakers, they probably stick out about and inch past where the OE map-pocket does.

Overall, I'm very happy with them.

This sounds extremely backwards to me. I'm fighting with my 6.5"s in the kicks right now due to them firing into my feet. I have to balance it to the left quite a bit if no one else is in the car with me. I'll be moving them to the map pocket area this summer.

That means that they aren't aimed properly. You won't be able to fix it as is if you don't have strong DSP. What you are describing of absolutely normal.

i've tried a few things in the kick panel area. The glovebox touches or the hood release is in the way. my 6.5's are going into the door w/ the 4's or i'll ditch the 4's and just run 6.5's and tweets.

why a 6x9, i think 6.5's should be fine. I have a 4 but i haven't decided if i am keeping it, or where i am going to put it.
