    amp questions

If i get a 2 channel amp, and use it to power 1 sub, would it be able to power a set of component speakers?

Noob when it comes to this stuff, but willing to learn.

also i wanted to place my sub behind my arm rest, and build a box for it, would it be a good or bad idea to have it ported threw the rear deck? or would it sound like gargabe. looking for a unique design and not to bad with fabricating my own things.

    TIA

    -Dan

it would be easier to purchase another 2ch (one amp for each application, sub and then somponents) or a 4 ch if you want to keep it all together. not sure about how a box will work that close to you in the cabin

ok thanks for the advice, but im still trying to find a place for the sub, e30 wagen has a picture of where i guess hes putting his sub, but i kinda wanna make it stealthy and have it face the cab, i herd you get the best sound if its facing you. anyone with ideas?

u will only get better sound if the sub is able to hit inside of the cabin (like if ur seat was able to fold forward which it can't and the sub faces into the cabin), if ur rear seat is keeping it from doing so, then it will sound better and louder off the trunk wall...i'm not sure about porting ur rear deck though, if u r even an eight of an inch off on the diameter it will distort the sound of the sub...wut size sub r u running? if u have an armrest, the cut a hoel for the sub and mount it to the seat facing toward the cabin, with the box behind it in the trunk, this will sound nice and no need to port

Dan, get a 4 channel amp to run your sub and a set of components. Make sure it has variable crossovers. I will be doing the Exile 600.4 in my GF's car. She will have a single 10", a pair of 6X9's installed under each rear quarter window and a set of 6.5" components in the doors. All of this will be running off of the 600.4. The ports will come through the factory speaker locations.

Her car will set a new standard in sound in E30s on a budget.

Just so you know, you should use a single voice coil sub with a 4 ohm rating.

Porting through the rear deck is excellent, I have done quite a few, including the fabled "Jordan" install...he actually did the install, but I built his box.

Have you punched out the "Ski Hole" hiding behind your rear seat? If not, pull the liner down and do so. One good whack with a small sledgehammer will get it.

I am going to run a single 10" sub, fitted tightly against the ski hole, with a total seal into the cabin of the car. Typically, 1.4 cubic feet will make an incredible sound with a single 10".

            Luke,

I plan on getting components and putting 6x9's on the rear deck. I have punched out the ski hole, fabbed a box so it looks like the sub isnt there. its a perfect fit. But here is where i have trouble. I wired my amp up so that the sub is bridged, this is jsut for the time being until i get everything else. I went to turn on my car to get some tunes, but i forgot that i did not run the remote wire to the head unit. so i ran it to the antenna power wire and then put the + and - back on the battery. now heres where im stuck...

the antenna goes up, but amp does not turn on. No fuses are blown and everything is hooked up correctly. this is not my frist time putting in a sub and amp so i dunno what went wrong. any ideas?

(also tried the remote wire to the battery, and power on wire for head unit, and still nothing.)

Does this meen i have a shit amp?

You more than likely have a shit fuse. Every since the chinese started making fuses, the solder melts inside the fuse...the fucking thing LOOKS good but is dead.

Test yo shit with a DVM or a test light.

a fuse inside the amp? i have 2 fuses on the positive wire that are fine. do i need to crack it open? and i hit it with a voltometer, on the amp, positive to negitive is 0 volts, remote to positive is like 3 volts, and positive to a ground in the car is 0 volts.

You have no power to that amp. If you set your DVM to "DC VOLTS" and put 1 lead on the positive terminal adn 1 on the ground terminal, you had better see about 12 volts or you do not have power, end of story.

I bet you are wrong here. Fuses these days SUCK ASS! I bet they LOOK good...

What I was saying (prevoius post) is that the cheap POS Chinese fuses are the only thing available, no matter where you go or what you buy or what you pay...

Shitty fuses that LOOK good but ARE dead. I am talking 3 out of 10 if I am lucky! NOTHING else is available in the entire industry, it is an everyday thing.

Test that fuse for continuity. I bet it is bad.

I foudn out the problem, had a bad ground, so i moved the ground over to the spare wheel well, works great and sounds amazing. Step 2, rear deck.

Update: used construction foam to make a 100% seal from the sub to the cabin, and it makes such a difference. sounds like i have 2 subs in the car.

compared to my friends explorer, with 2 12 inch kenwoods with an alpine amp
i have a much better sounding bass. Recommend that everyone does this. Its cheap fast and effective.

anyone know a place where i can get some nice components for a good price?

What is this "construction foam" and where do you get it? I fit the box carefully (because I have built hundreds of custom boxes and I can) and rubber weatherstripping...I am always looking for new materials and ideas, though.

I sell Exile. I think they are the best value out there, and there is such a thing as a R3V discount.

I will not discuss the price in print anywhere. You must call me.

Just sealant foam, easy to work with and very light and cheap. I actaully was thinking since its such a great insulator for homes, what if you made almost a "wall" of it to replace dynomat or something.

Its such a great product and it makes an air tight seal ( becuase it expands to be almsot 3 times its original size)

                            Edit: http://greatstuff.dow.com/greatstuff...here/index.htm

I would try using it for a project and i was thinking it might do well for enclosures. experiment and let me know what you think.

Also is there a number i can reach you at? I would need to get tweeter pods, but i think a 5.25 will fit in stock location up front correct? and then some 2 way 6x9's in the rear deck?

Damn, never heard expanding foam called construction before.

What the hell, I work on cars. I don't know nothing!
