    Luke! (StereoInstaller1) need opinion!

Hey man-you seem to have pretty good advice on stereo stuff. What is your general feeling on Sony decks? Like this one:

I'm looking for a decent set-up with room for expansion. I don't blast the radio super loud but do like to have nice sound. Thanks!

Forgot to say that I have an '88is with premium sound. Could I use this H/U with the stock speakers until I can get new speakers, tweeters, etc?

I bet he will say something like.

I been doing this all my life.
      i know everything
      you know nothing
and that stereo will require you to keep everything stock in the car
and it will bring you panties from all over the seven seas....

      just a random thought.

Sony deck in general are excellent. Operation wise, I like them best. Excellent features, great sound, dirt cheap at Wal-Mart (which is where I send my customers: I do not carry head units at all) I especailly like the "Rotary Commander" which is old hat for Sony, but they quit them years ago and are now coming back.

Here is my only bitch with that deck: No high pass filters. HPF makes a HUGE difference in sound quality, assuming you have a subwoofer.

I looked at the owners manual, seems the deck is very full-featured. Would have been nice to see a USB port, but you can't have everything, right?

Before you buy, check out the Panasonic CQ-C7413. Easily my favorite head unit under $200 today, especially in the E30. Color match is nearly perfect, face looks pretty good considering it isn't German...

Well, you WILL have to rewire your car, but aside from that...

If you had a deck with high pass filters, added aftermarket crossovers for the front speakers, took the paper/cloth cover off of the stock tweeter, used a decent 10" sub in a small (about 1.2 cu.ft.) ported box and a decent 2 channel sub amp to run it and stock speakers front and rear (assuming good condition, etc) you would be amazed at how good your car sounded.

If you are skilled at box building (got a table saw?) you could do the entire thing for under $400 and probably be satisfied forever.

Thanks for the reply Luke! That Panasonic deck looks pretty cool. Yes, USB would be nice to have-another thing to think about.

If you were to build a box to be installed where the ski-hole is, how good would it sound with a non-armrest seat? Isn't it the point to have a hole where the sound can go into the cab without being covered by the seat back?

In other words, does it make sense to remove the ski-hole cover, build a box and attach it so that the speaker points into the back of the seat-back without having a thru-hole available? Wouldn't the sound just be muffled by the foam and leather?

                Thanks!
