      They're both mediocre?

Alpine/Eclipse. I'd consider Pioneer/Kenwood I step down from those two, but still MUCH better than the crap mentioned above.

If you're looking for a competition sq vehicle, go for an alpine or eclipse. Mcintosh evidently is pretty clean, but they're pretty pricey, and owned by Clarion now. The higher line of nakamichi is pretty good, but like the mcintosh, there just isn't a whole lot of eqing built into the deck, so you'll have to run an external processor.

If you just want something to play your music with, I've had good luck with Clarion, and I'm sure the lower alpine decks are still good. With the newer Clarions, you get 3 way cross-overs and digital time alignment built in for about $200 on ebay. dxz-775usb is what I was looking at before I decided to go a different route. I had the dxz-745mp in my 5er for a while, which is now at home in my girlfriends e36. The nice thing about both of those decks is that you can change the RGB values of the backlight to match your dash perfectly(which annoys the shit out of me now, because my girlfriend has it cycling through the colors all the time.)

As far as your question though: I haven't purchased a sony product for years and years (before the sony es line went to shit), and I dont have any experience with panasonic.

Luke likes them both though, so for all I know, they could be decent decks.

Pretty much every brand has a good and bad hu. Unless you are going for the very high end stuff, you most likely won't hear a difference.. Keep in mind cars are probably the Worse environment for audio, unless you listen to it while parked with the engine off and have no rattles anywhere ;)

I think you SQ guys would be absolutely shocked at how good the Panasonics sound. Clean as hell, very very low noise, very detailed and dynamic, with some of the best "sweetness" on the market today.

Nice high output too, with very low impedance. They don't get the squaky midrange hi-volt Alpines get, and way cleaner bass than the Pioneer.

Of course, they don't keep up with the 7909's or the 9255, but in SQ they will give a CD400 a run for the money...especially for half of the money!

most common to break: sony, aiwa, cheap jvcs, kenwood flip faces of any kind (motorized or not)

sony's are pretty much the worst major brand though. absolute trash in my educated opinion
