Recently, WA State passed a law that you may no longer text message and drive (good), the next law which starts in Jan 2008 is that you must have a headset, or some form of hands free device when driving.
Today, most people simply use bluetooth for this, however I'm very partial to my Alpine 7998 Headunit, and frankly it has done everything I could ask of it, and it matches the rest of the car very well.
In 2002/2003, Alpine partnered with Nokia to develop the Alpine Mobile Hub, it was basically a failure as it was limited to one cellphone, the Nokia 6310i, and was fairly difficult to come by. However its design was quite ingenius, and allowed seamless integration of headunit and cellphone.
I've been trying to find one for awhile, and finally came across an ebay ad for the Alpine Adapter, and Cellphone, for a price of 35 dollars plus shipping.
I activated another cell line on my Cingular account, and when i'm in the car I press one keystroke on my regular cell, and it forwards all calls to the E30.
The speakers obviously turn into a speakerphone, and the microphone is mounted where the factory climate control system temp sensor normally sits (that bulge on the HVAC Center Console) Sound quality is pretty damn good, and I can turn it up very loud and still understand everything, even the caller can understand me fine. Its also humorous as the mic picks up the entire engine noise, so when I'm at full throttle, they know about it.
Here are pics of it, I tried to keep it as hidden as possible.
