    si batteries wtf

ive changed em once with radioshack nicad rechargeables, and everything worked fine for about 2 or 3 years except the mpg gauge. but that wasnt a big deal.

all the sudden, 3 days ago the tach stops working. then it would twitch around. so i opened up the cluster and the solders broke loose from the batteries. so i resoldered them but they kept breaking loose.

i used some acid core solder and i think one battery burnt out and is trash. so i replaced it with the same kind of battery. soldered it in and started the car. car wouldnt start....so i jumped it and the tach needle twitched and went back down. the mpg gauge is stuck on 25, and the temp needle swings from cold to hot constantly. i have a vid. but what the hell could have happened???

i recharged the new battery, is it not fully charged so everythings acting weird? im gonna get new batteries and a new charger and try it all again. but someone give me some clues.

    No vid.

The batteries should come with enough charge for things to work correctly.

the just shows the gauges in action. the tach twitches maybe to 200rpm and the temp twitches/swings back and forth from hot to cold pretty fast. i dunno what the deal is. could i have fried the board?

Well, first off, never use acid core solder for electrical connections. The acid makes this corrode and that is why the solder joint kept breaking. You want to use rosin core solder.

I would guess the SI board since you tried new batteries and the fact that it is erratic.

well the rosin core is what kept breaking. so i used acid core because its stronger. ill unsolder it get new batteries and try with a heavy duty rosin core. somethings draining the battery though. it doesnt start for shit. i put it on a charger over night so ill see how it does.

Acid core is no stronger then rosin core. It's the same solder, just a different flux.

Your problem was more then likely that you didn't heat the pieces you were soldering, you merely melted solder on to them. Try a bit more heat and try tinning both the battery and the contact before you connect them. I would also clean the ends of the battery and the terminals with a little sandpaper before applying solder. This will help the solder stick a bit better.

It very well could just be a bad solder joint that is not connecting the battery well enough to the contacts.

alright, last time i replaced the batteries i used a 100w soldering gun and rosin core. all worked out. but the solders broke. the reason i used an iron this time was to get up close to the batteries. my friend said somethin about his grandfather being an electrical engineer and acid cores stronger. but whatever, i just want this shit to work. ill unsolder them, tin the batteries and used rosin core. if not a friends got a spare SI board.

I wasn't trying to bad mouth you or anything. Merely trying to help. Sorry if it came off that way, just giving my personal experience.

if the car is overheating, try opening the bleeder valve and bleeding air out of the system.

man im honestly giving up until tomorrow when i get a new board. that way i can tell if the temp gauge is really going to red or if its just the fact that the boards messed up.
