I want to move the battery in my cabrio to the trunk, and I'm wondering what is involved. The OEM battery cable is $120, but I'm wondering if I really need it? Can I just run a proper guage, insulated wire from the trunk to the engine bay? Is there anything special about the OEM cable that would prevent me from doing it myself?

Shouldn't matter what wire you use, as long as it is large enough gauge.
Why not just pull one out of a parts car? -
thought about that, but realized it may be a LOT of work to get it out while crawling around in a junkyard car.Comment

When I pulled the black tray held by 4 bolts, I found a ~50lb wieght in there. I'm hoping I can put the tray back in without the wieght, using shorter bolts. Then just stick the battery on that and strap the fucker down.Comment
