V1 comes with a kit that can be used to hardwire it. I put the little box that wires into the power, and has the phone line connector underneath my steering column. Then I ran the phone line up the a pillar, and ran it out above my mirror. Nice thing about this is, I can get a concealed display someday, and I'm alreayd ready to plug it in.
Just find a 12v source and a ground - that's all you need. Find the V1 hardwire kit - shoulda come with the v1.
i don't believe there is a constant 12v from any of the wires in a 318is check panel. try to pull power from the dome light, or do what sean suggested and pull power from the dash, running the wire up the a-pillar. good luck.
My box is chilling by the ECU, the phone cord is plenty long to reach your V1's new home.
I am in the Land Cruiser right now, so I cant look at what I tapped into, but the install was super easy with mounting it there. (plus it is switched with the key, which you want)

I responded to the exact same post on M42club.com, but FWIW:
You can tap the green/white wire, it is +12V in start or run off of fuse 10, 7.5A. The violet wire is hot all the time, the brown/black one goes back to the SRS diagnostic module, and the brown/violet one goes to the seatbelt warning timer.

No idea - I stopped using radar detectors years ago, so I have no clue how big the module is. But you could probably fit a pack of smokes up there (roughly), so as long as it is about that size or smaller, I would imagine you would be OK.

I'm lazy so I took apart my knee bolster and ran a cable through it and up the a pillar which pops out by the rear view mirror and then I just plug it in to the cigarette adapter. Saves me wiring hassle, no stray cables running amok, and if I need to turn it off and not piss off a cop I can just reach over and unplug it, no need to reach up and look suspicious.
RTFM and tell us what each wire in the phone line is supposed to be - off hand, I would say a radar detector would need +12V and ground - what else is there?
