Aftermarket VDO speedo and stock diff sender?

Has anyone used aftermarket speedometers with the stock sender in the diff?

It should work in theory, since the VDO speedometer installation instructions call for a pulsing signal, which is exactly what the stock sender does... right?

Any input? I've seen one or two people here with custom gauge clusters.

PM super duper. He had that sweet gauge setup on his old s50 e30
