Pemium Sound Buzz/squeak

My speakers have this terrible mixture of buzzing and squeaking sounds coming from them intermittently. Could this be caused by anything except bad wiring?

I don't know anything about speakers, so if i've said something dumb, take it easy.

Do you have the original stereo or an aftermarket? The original stereo is well known to have problems with the volume control-rheostat. It gets dirty and worn out causing the static/buzzing you are referring to. It is usually temporarily taken care of with some contact cleaner or wd4o. If its an aftermarket the culprit could be the wiring as you suspected. Otherwise check for blown speakers or if debris has fallen into the speakers or even if the speakers are screwed in tight causing this noise as well.
