I have an alarm, but I'm just thinking of the times when I'm not around to hear it (and run outside w/ my 357mag:D) like at the airport, anywhere really. And cars do get stolen around here. God I fucking hate thieves!

Out of most of the rolling turds that hit the roads in the '80s E30s are by far one of the more theft resistant, and as of late, less desirable theft targets. GM G-bodies (RWD Monte carlos, Cutlasses, and Grand Prix) have enough metal to make 2 E30s and can be stolen by a 10 year old.
Luke, I've had good luck with OEM stuff and industrial grade stuff, but getting it takes some looking as most people just hand you a generic that will "work". Either way, starter kills are easy to bypass, and the first place someone looks to bypass one is above the drivers footwell which is where EVERYONE puts them. Should someone have taken the time to hide it, then jumping the starter or pop starting it gets around it fairly quickly.
Want a little extra theft protection for when you leave the car somewhere unsupervised? Pocket the main relay, or unplug the CPS or something important. If you are set on an electrically controlled countermeasure, cut power to the fuel pumps, DME, etc. Maybe even ground out the coil.
Some company sells solenoid valves you install in your fuel line to cut off the flow to the front of the car to eliminate hotwiring the pumps (which I doubt you'll need to worry about anyway)
SuperDuper, move the wire from the center terminal (87a) to the bottom one (30) and your good. The gray band on the diode does go toward the lighter.-Dave

If you are looking for a theft deterrent, look elsewhere as this isn't.-Dave

Well, why dont you think it would be a good theft deterrant? especially if I take the lighter with me. Yea they could bump start it, but for what it's worth, iXes are way harder to bump start than normal RWD's trust me on this. but regardless would a crook really think about the lighter? Probably not. I dont know I'm not dead set on it, just thought one more layer of protection would be nice, so long as its not more of a hassle that wht it's worth. Thanks again for your help.

Any form of starter bypass is too easy to circumvent, be it controlled by a switch, alarm system, or even a cigarette lighter.-Dave

I mean what dumb ass criminal would think to push in the lighter to start the car? You could also just take out the lighter all together, and there is no way they could start it. Has anyone done this? Thanks.

and also, as mentioned before, an e30 isnt worth that much so I doubt any one is going to spend much time trying to figure out why the car isnt starting. Theyd probably figure the battery is dead and then move on. So you say you havent had any problems with yours? Just push in the lighter and start as normal?sigpic

I used to have a circuit similar to this in my old IASCA car. By pushing in the lighter, the rear speakers would turn off for SQ meter testing. For the objective listening portion with the judges, I would just pop the lighter back to its resting position and viola, rear speakers.Originally posted by Simon SWhen a dream is a dream for too long - it becomes a fantasy..

Switch around 87 and 30 in your description, and your good. 30 is the one that always connects to something, either 87 or 87a depending on if its energized or not.-Dave

so it's cool to follow the diagram above(Super Duper's on first page), only with 87 and 30 switched and I'm good to go?Last edited by aaron325ix; 01-05-2008, 02:48 PM.sigpic
