This gear worth my time? (A/D/S Content)

My godfather just got a 911SC Parts car in, which happens to have some rather nice stereo equipment in it, so my question is should I nab this stuff and clean it up for my car?

Right now I have a basic F240 Alpine 4 channel amp running my MB Quart fronts, and a M350 running a 10inch JL, nothing expensive, but it works.

Both of the A/D/S amps are PQ20's, and it has a 642CSI Signal Processor, it all did work, although the head unit is missing from the car.

I've heard great things about this generation equipment, but its worth a question.

Also, can anybody identify these woofers by any chance? They are glued in very well so I have no way of ripping them out, but maybe some old school guy would recognize it.

I dont recognize the woofers but I'm very familiar with the ADS stuff. While they're decent, I've never really cared for the ADS crossovers. The amp on the other hand, yeah, it really doesnt get any better in terms of a true sound quality amp. ADS amps are well known for their warmth. PQ20's and PQ10's can be found on Ebay for a pretty reasonable price, its the PH15's that are selling for as much as they sold new 15 years ago...

I'd keep the amp and ditch the crossover. Your 7998 has active crossovers anyway.

What do you think of that opinion? ;)

            PQ20 = awesome (I'm rocking a PQ10)

You may have already made a decision on this, but just in case let me put in my .02....HELL YES keep it!

As mentioned, the a/d/s/ amps are very sound quality oriented and from my personal experience, almost bulletproof. I would personally say you could match them against the best sound quality amplifiers on the market today and they would more than hold their own, if not match them. The 642CSi crossover is also very nice, but not very 'user friendly' as the crossover slopes are set via plug-in resistor modules that are now NLA for a long, long time. You can make your own, but from the instructions I have it's a PITA. I bought a brand new, in the box 642CSi a couple of years ago but opted not to use it. Instead, I purchased an Alpine head unit that had it's own built-in crossovers.

As far as the subs, those look like a/d/s/ 7 or 8" models in a custom made box. Once again, very good woofers for sound quality applications. The system in my E30 M3 consists of an a/d/s/ PH15 amplifier that I have owned since 1992 powering a relatively rare (and now VERY hard to find) a/d/s/ SB10 subwoofer system with two a/d/s/ 10" woofers and a set of Boston Acoustics ProSeries 5.4 components. I have to say, after all of these years of having different car audio setups the SB10 subwoofer box has almost perfect bass for my needs-very tight, punchy, and extremely musical-but can go very low if needed. Plus, the box only weighs about 40lbs total so it is relatively lightweight.

So yes, I would keep these amps and the woofers-however, if there is a part of the system you might want to sell, please let me know as I am interested.

                  here it comes...

I have been holding on to these ever since I bought them new in 93. I've never heard a better set of component speakers. I've had Boston, Polk, Alpine, and even multiple Dynaudio 2 and 3 way setups. These are the warmest sounding, most natural speakers ever. I think they will go nicely into my E30 as part of my semi-period correct system.

They just dont make this stuff like they used to... :(

Bob, how right you are...a couple of years ago when I was putting together this 'period correct' system in the M3 (besides the Alpine head unit), I kept a constant watch on ebay for a set of the 320is components. I wound up missing a few sets and losing the auctions, and then this set of BA Pro 5.4's came along at a great price. Back in '92, I went and listened to a few of the higher-end components of the time-it came down to a set of BA Pro 6.2's or the 320is. I loved them both, but due to the fact I could buy the BA's mailorder (no Internet ordering is 1992!) for much less I went with them. So going with another set of BA components was quite alright, and I am very happy with them.

But I still envy your 320is components!

I have a set of ORIGINAL 300i plates sitting around. Drivers are OK, crossovers are OK, but they are kind of beat up...but talk about the perfect rear speakers for the right E30!

I think the car has 320IS front speakers as well, at least judging by the photo's above, didn't even think about that.. so I will snag those as well.

Now I have heard that older gen A/D/S stuff does not like high voltage inputs, and I'm somewhat in the middle of the pack at 4V, any possible issues anybody can see?

EDIT: Also, my godfather is keeping the subs for his 911, what would you all recommend to power them, I know NOTHING about what power inputs they require.

James, hit those subs with a DVM, see if you have 4 ohm or 8 ohm. Choose you amp based on power needs and final load.

As far as the ADS amps not liking higher input levels....pure bullshit.

AudioControl has ALWAYS had a true 9V RMS output, and I have done several installs using Audiocontrol EQ's or crossovers, often on PQ20s. Your deck that says "5V output" makes about 2V RMS, that rating is peak voltage, the Audiocontrol stuff will do 9VRMS and 13V peak at the end of a 50 foot RCA....

So I have no way of getting the subs out of the enclosure, although I do know they are running 2 separate wire feeds out of the box.

I figure I'll just measure across the poles and verify what they are wired for. It always reads low on a multimeter correct?

For the Amp, I presume I can get that through you? ;)
