    6x9 question?

    I have a pair of Alpine type "S" 6x9's.

I want to put them in my rear deck but I have premimum speakers and the hole for them is not big enough.

I am mainly just curious what you guys have done to put them in the back, maybe just cut the metal? or maybe used 6x9 mini boxes over the holes? maybe even in the rear door panels? Just curious for some ideas because they have just been sitting around in their box.

just cut some mdf, recover the rear shelf and mount the 6x9s. thats what I did

I thought about fabbing a rasied box (bout' an inch like the premium speakers) to house them to prevent cutting

couldnt you cut the metal so they can fit properly, and even put the premium sound covers over them afterward so it looks clean? I was thinking about this the other day.

Yes, you can, I have, but the trunk springs generally are in the way, so no big burly 6X9s.

sorry not anymore. I basically used MDF to raise the speaker so that it sits level with the non recessed area of the rear deck. Then cut a hole to fit the speaker in. recovered the rear deck and fitted the speakers. looks descent and was a cheap upgrade.

Luke- is there any larger speak you can fit back there thats actually worth the hassle? im looking into replacing all my speakers soon, and if there is a worthwhile upgrade i can do while im at it, id be stoked.

I always use a good 2 or 3 way 6.5" coaxial for rear fill. Most of the source is faded front anyway. You just barely want to hear the rears. They aren't for bass, even if you use 6x9's. You'd need at least a semi sealed box to get good bass out of a 6x9. Might be worth the trouble if you aren't doing a sub... otherwise, go with a good 6.5. Easier to fit anyway. Jmho, I've done 6x9's back when I first started car audio and now have done 6.5's for like the last 4 years.

you can go even further in saving money by just getting a 2 way co-axil because most of the time, anything more than a "2 way" is a waste of money.

Yes, there are several worthwhile upgrades, and none of them include rear speakers in a tiny car like an E30.

Let me see if I can show you why you should not run rear speakers in an E30.

If you have 2 speakers firing towards your ankles and 2 more firing off of a mirror and into the back of your head, which do you think you are gonna hear more of?

Do you want the sound coming from behind you? Do you sit backwards in your seat at a concert? I assume not, but if so, please go kill yourself right now. And, shut the hell up so we can enjoy the show, OK?

So, now we all understand that the rear speakers will MASSIVELY drown the fronts out, but aside from that, what is the issue? Two words: Phase angle.

We all know what happens if a speaker is 180 degrees out of phase, right? No bass, shitty 'phasey" sound, piss poor clarity, basically 1 speaker sucking up the noise the other one makes...kind of crappy way to spend your hard earned dollars, right?

So, we all know that a circle is 360 degrees, right? So, "Phase Angle" is basically any incorrect phase that is different than perfect...so if you have speakers firing towards you ankles that are "Zero Degrees" or "In Phase" and then you have 2 more that are closer to your ears, in a better space acoustically, have better bass and are NOT "In Phase" with the front speakers, just what the hell do you think is gonna happen?

Shitty, crappy, poorly positioned, "phasey", typical BMW sound. Absolute crap. Replace the speakers and it only gets worse, because now you have gone and spent money on shitty sound, and are desperately trying to convince yourself that it sounds better...nope. E30s are basically a case of go big or go home if you want not just "good" sound, but "great" sound.

These cars suck ass for stereo. Trust me, a 1983 Thunderbird with a pair of 6X9s and a a pair of 3.5" running on a tiny 4 channel amp making 25 watts per channel (but using my custom crossovers) sounds 85% as good as my car, and better than 99% of the cars you have ever heard.*

One solution is to move the rear speakers. On a 4 door, placing them in the rear doors is an excellent way to improve clarity and make better room for a subwoofer. It is a HUGE improvement to run the front speakers in the doors, too. Doors are not the ideal place fro speakers by any means, but far better than firing at your ankles.

ALL car audio is made of compromises. You simply must deal with it.

*IMO, the vast majority of people have no clue what good sound is like, and simply are not qualified to answer the question of "does that sound good?", including "your buddy the musician", and the "guy who knows all about stereo" and the "guy who spent 10 grand on his home theater system"...trust me, 99.999% of them can't tell a 5Khz tome from a 500Hz tone, rarely have hearing capable of discerning a 5db drop or gain, and have no actual training or experience.

Oh yeah, this includes 99.9% of the fucking morons in the "car audio" industry.
