The factory amp? What else is back there?

    Sorry for an odd title.

While replacing my power antenna with an interchangeable mast (see writeup here: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1004311 ) I believe that I found the factory amp, still installed but not in use.

I'm trying to figure out what is 'mounted' to it (outboard side). I can't get a very good view, but I see a large harness plugged into the box in question. It could be that this is just part of the amp assembly, but I don't know for sure.

I'm considering pulling the amp, and want to know if I have to develop a new way to mount this other piece. If it's part of the amp (potentially silly question alert), are all the wires in this harness part of the audio system? If so, I think I want to pull them all out. I want this new stereo install to be clean and clutter free, without all the guessing and wire-diagram-checking that I've had to do (in case I sell the car, that is).

First pic is from the inboard side - you can see part of the Blaupunkt name.
Second pic is from the rear. You can see that this piece (or section) in question is a different size, which is why I am/was thinking this was a separate component.

There's three screws holding it all in, the 2 that go into the gold bracket and one forward (about 6-7") of that. Remove those, pull the whole thing out, and you can seperate the amp from the bracket and reinstall the bracket. The wires go into a big molex that plugs into the amp, they can all be removed if you are getting rid of everything. The antenna wires are in there also, if you're keeping the power antenna you don't want to shitcan those.

It's pretty obvious once you get in there and start rootin' around.

      Thanks Brian.

You're saying that the gear back there is ALL amp? Great. I was going to pull it tonight (before LOST) to check it out for part numbers. I didn't get to it last night, as it was getting late.

No, the amp can be seperated from the bracket and those relays, but you will want to reinstall the bracket and relays (or whatever they are, for the light check system?). The wiring to the amp is in it's own loom, fairly easy to isolate.
