    Cluster question

My Engine Temp gauge bounces from side to side pretty frequently and also my gas gauge now does the same thing.

What could cause this and for anyone who this has happened to what was the solution.

I am thinking for temp gauge maybe the nut on the back? or actual sensor?

and for gas gauge maybe the feul level sensor?

Pulling cluster tomorrow to see what is up and tighten nuts if loose.

Also...for later model cars will a 325i(s) cluster work for a 318i(s) if i sawp coding plugs?

I finally found the answer all late model clusters will swap over with the the coding plug specific to your car.

My reason for this question was I was wanting to swap in a Euro/canadian Cluster.
I wanted to know if the coding plugs were different at all. I wasnt sure if the Euro Model cars designated as to what year and what car started using the later model clusters.

Check the rear nuts on the cluster behind the temp / fuel gauge first.
Check that the connection on the temp sender unit in the engine bay is good
If the above does not fix you remove the cluster, check the SI Board and check for bad colder joints on the main cluster board where the rear plugs connect.

My board had bad/cold solder joints, so re-flowing the solder there fixed it 100%.

You would think that someone with that many posts in such a short time, would know how this place works by now....

Especially knowing the past history of this member.

Can anyone help me out on this. So on my cluster, everything works except the fuel gauge. All the lights turn on and the needle works perfectly. I replace the fuel sender unit with a new one and still nothing which leads me to think it could possibly be the fuel gauge unit itself? I read on this forum about the SI board, but can't get a visual of what exactly am I suppose to look for. What can I do to troubleshoot this issue? It bugs me not having the fuel gauge work. Thanks!
