Help troubleshoot premium rear speaker please

I hooked up premium speakers to my rear aftermarket headunit and liked the sound better than the aftermarket coaxials I have laying around.

The only issue is that one side has no sound in the woofer, only the tweeter.
The car wiring works because the previous speakers worked fine.

so I'll pull the driver and look it over. Anything typically wrong with these? I'll check all the wires and see what I find.
    Any suggestions?

Are premium front speakers the same as premium rears? I can look for some to replace it if it's dead.

All wires seem to be intact. No broken solder points from what i can see. The thin wires to the speaker cone are intact but maybe they don't reach to the bottom coil?
I can't seem to figure it out.
Hopefully I can find a replacement. If not then I'll be slapping some coaxials in, regrettably.

Hokay, man, seems to me no one is stepping up to help, so I will.

YOU HAVE A BLOWN SPEAKER! I think it not unusual for a damn near 20 year old speaker to be blown, so yeah, all blow'd up and shit.

The front speakers have crossovers built in to run the front tweeters off of, otherwise they are the same...you just gotta look closely to see which ones actually go to the speaker and which ones are part of the crossover.

So, if you want to make the thing sound remarkably good all cheap like, grab a set of decent 5.25" components, place them in the front locations, put the best pair in the rear, and rock on.

thanks, that's what I figured but the blown speakers i usually hear are all distorted.

I'll look for some front premiums if i run across any. I was surprised at how good they sounded so I figure I'll keep the BMW flavor going.

I want to find some 5.25 components that will sound decent with headunit amplification. I don't want to do a bunch of wiring etc and don't want to add weight. I have my other car for stereo fun. I have a 4 way amp but wanted to keep it cheaper and smaller for the E30.

any suggestions on sensitive components or just go with coax for basic sound and call it a day?

Also, will the 8ohm BMW rears mess with my headunit amp? Like make it too hot or kill it in time?

8 ohm means less heat, less "load".

Check out Memphis "MSync" components. Excellent stuff, reasonable.

Just found some more 8ohm BMW premium woofers. I'll install these in the fronts and see how it does. I really liked the warmth they had over the coaxials I tried.

Sounds like 8ohm is a good choice for a stock headunit amp? Less load and less heat?
            Thanks for your insights.

4 ohm will give you more volume, 8 ohm a bit cleaner.

Hell, run 4 of the 5.25's in the rear!

oops, i think the woofers are 4 ohm and the tweets are 8 ohm. I'm dumb.

Regardless, I'll have full BMW speakers set up here shortly. Now I just need to get a passenger tweeter panel.

Pulled 5.25 woofers out of a 90s 5 series and they looked super nice since they never see sunlight. I only passed on it because it didn't have the same coil and resistor the E30 ones have.

So go to a local car stereo shop and ask the installers of they might have a set of crossovers for sale.

The sound is improved tremendously from the stock crossovers.

Then, go back and get those 5er speakers.

Dang, now i gotta go out again? Ha ha

I think I read somewhere that you disconnected the rear tweeters? Left the tweets for front soundstage? Or is it worth it to just keep full component sound front/back and adjust the fader?

Think I'll get crossovers from the installers cheaper than online?

(Once I get these in and hear them I'm thinking it might be worth it to use these speakers in my other cars as well. Thick but light cones, rubber surrounds, big magnets and available for cheap in the 'yards.)
