crossover advice? Looking to pick up set for premium speakers

I want to get a set but don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm putting premium speakers in the front and rear and running them off the headunit. I suppose I will go ahead and take the time to rewire the main speaker wire too. From what I hear, i should put crossovers between woofer and tweet to get best sound, so I figure I might as well do it right the first time.

Any crossover would work? Put them in the fronts AND the rears? Should i just leave the tweets off the rears to use them as woofer fill or is it preferable to have front and rear woofer/tweeter and just use the fader to balance them? So this means I need two pairs of x-over.

I'll be running off simple sony CD headunit and don't plan to add sub or amp.

I just picked up some blaupunkt components from the crutchfield outlet. fairly good prices, less than 100$

      I just want the crossovers.

I installed the BMW premiums in the front last night and they don't sound as good as the rears (no tweeters yet but bass is lacking and muddy).
The rears sound fine and give a nice full sound. Not SQ levels obviously but "good enough" to listen to.

in my car I have four total crossovers, one for each woofer//tweeter pair. I have two crossovers mounted to my sub box in my trunk for my rears and two under my glove box for my fronts. Your normal speaker wires will run to the crossovers from the head unit (or amp), then the crossover will have terminals for the woofer and tweeter. how much bass are you wanting anyway? i dont know that you will get much bass out of just component speakers. btw im running mb quart Q series 5.25" in the rear and front. can send you pics if you want, maybe that will help you out some?

Passive Crossovers (the ones that go after the amplifier, but before speakers) are not universal. They are designed with specific drivers (speakers) in mind. Instead of throwing random passive crossover, you can invest in a small 2-4ch amplifier with built in active crossover.

Crossovers are close enough to universal to do just fine for a low power application: the guy is just looking to get some sound in his car.

So when looking for crossovers, in general, the more crap on the circuit board, the better the crossover.

In general, look for Mylar capacitors, which generally are yellow, and always MUCH larger than electrolytic, which are crap.

If you find a pair of crossovers with odd little light bulbs on the board, that is a winner.

Go hit up the installers at a local car stereo shop, not a best buy or circuit city. Try to not talk to a salesperson, either. Most of us have that shit sitting in the bottom drawer of our toolbox.

I don't agree, that's just doing it a half-assed way ;) Plus, sometimes low count > high count when it comes to crossovers. Then it's all out the window when you talk about active crossovers.

Each driver is different,...ehhhh fuck it... just get some bass blockers haha.

/spent countless hours on designing a 2 way crossover for his home speakers, modeled and then tested with a calibrated mic out in open area to limit amount of reflections ietc.... used Mills non conductive resistors, 12-14ga inductors and solen caps... each crossover is a couple lbs. end result = makes you try and find good records as records that aren't well produced show ALL of the flaws....

So you think anything less than Zobel networks and 24bd/oct and Chateau Reaux caps isn't adequate? WTF, man, this is just deck power on 4 speakers that are 20 years old!

                Hows your Sheffield Labs collection?

Yep, I'm ok with half assed for this car. :)
Junkyard speakers that sound better than aftermarket coaxials at a fraction of the cost is cool with me. I'll be mostly driving with no music on during autocrosses and canyon carving anyhow.

Since I know nothing of the make on these speakers, how about just leaving them alone? They have what i 'assume' is a little something attached to them to make the tweeters happy. Any reason not to just leave them be?
I just need a passenger tweeter sail now.
