    Testing Air Bag Sensors

My light for the SRS is on in my 1990 325i. I found my two air bag sensors, but I don't know how to test them. Can I do it with a volt meter?

What are these sensors measuring? Rapid stopping? (some kind of contact inside?)

I assume the wires run back to the control module. Where is that located & what does it look like? Is there a wiring diagram on-line for a 1990 325i?

They measure impact, so I suppose giving them a good smack with a rubber mallet would do it. I'm sure there's some legit way though.

Control module is behind the drivers side knee panel. All air bag related wiring has bright orange connectors. I would not advise testing anything until you have the correct information on how to do that. You might just blow the airbag and might possibly in your face if not careful.

I would delete the whole airbag system honestly. I did, afterall who wants a 18+ year old explosive going off in your face for no reason. These systems are very primitive and I simply could not trust mine because of this.

They can't be tested. You just replace it. These systems are a real pain in the ass. The module does not give codes, and you need to reset it AT the module, not at a remote location. If you want it fixed, its best not to try and do it yourself and take it to a good shop. With your airbag knowledge, you have a large risk of setting off the bag.

          Removing the airbag system

Thanks for the advice. Seems strange to me that the control module gives no code and you can't test the sensors. What is the point? When the light goes on you have to replace the whole system?

Is it hard to remove the airbag? What do you put in it's place? How do you put out the SRS light?

The airbag just unplugs and pulls out. I think it's only two wires. You don't put anything in it's place. And to turn off the light, just pull the bulb.

I can't remember exactly, but I think you have to get a new steering wheel if you go the non-airbag route. I may be wrong though.
