1984 325e with 13 button OBC.
Car was stolen several years ago and the steering column wiring all ripped up all for the purpose of stealing a $500 stereo. People like than need to get their right hand cut off or something. Anyway,
Because of these and other problems I ended up with it and I'm trying to piece it together.
I have replaced the ign lock and the stalk switches and the OBC backlight (which was burned out...not the thieves fault).
I've gotten most things back up but am having problem with the OBC backlight.
it wants to stay on with the power off. The wiring diagrams say this should not be. Fuse 12, which feeds the OBC, is supposed to get juice only with the key in an on position.
now, I replaced the ign lock with one from ebay and reused the ign switch (round brown thing with pigtail) that I had been operating with a stubby screwdriver.
Could this mistreated ign switch be the bad actor here? The only damage I can see is a slight widening of the slot that fits up to the lock. It is not cracked or broken in any way I can see.
the backlight goes "off" if I turn on the headlights, but by turning the reostat I can bring it back up again to a "dimmer than it would be in broad daylight but on and visible at night" condition.
