Personally, I feel four speakers hooked up directly to a modern head unit will sound WAY better than stock as long as you bypass the premium sound amp or the fader in non premium cars.

Do you have an MP3 player?

if so, spend most of it on the speakers and get that MP3 input from a forum member...can't remember who did them. They wire up to the radio and you have new music.

          Define "blast".

I listen to mostly classical piano on my system at a low volume, slightly above the mechanical thrum of an M20B27 at 1500 rpm.

How about a JVC Kaboom Box in the rear seat?

Buy a newer alpine headunit on ebay, or crutchfield. Pick up 5.25s for the front and 6.5 components for the rear deck(they fit). Again, ebay isn't a bad call to save some green. You can get decent sound out of those with the amp in the headunit. Pick up a decent 10" sub, any old ported box, and a used mono amp putting out 200w or so. You'd be surprised how nice the setup sounds having spent the bare minimum.
