Greg's big post of stereo questions!

    OK here goes.
i am putting the stereo back in my car.
here is the list of everything:
    Kenwood deck KDC-MP922
    IT HAS:
RDS, 5.0V preout,WoW,HD radio ready,MP-3, XM radio and is 50X4

for amps i am running an ALPINE V-12
IT has 4/3/2 channel+ subwolfer drive power amplifier (what ever that means) model number MVR-F352. (this is in the car now) specs on amp

    RMS Continuous Power (Watt) (at 12V, 20-20kHz) 4 ohms Stereo 30W x 4 (0.08% THD) + 100W x 1(0.3% THD); 2 ohms Stereo (0.3% THD): 40W x 4 + 100W x 1, Bridged 4 ohms (0.3% THD); 80W x 2 + 100W x 1
    RMS Continuous Power (Watt) (at 14.4V, 20-20kHz) 4 ohms Stereo 50W x 4 (0.08% THD) + 150W x 1(0.3% THD), 2 ohms Stereo (0.3% THD): 60W x 4 + 150W x 1, Bridged 4 ohms (0.3% THD): 120W x 2 + 150W x 1
    10% T.H.D Power (Watt) (at 14.4V, 1kHz, 10% THD): 75W x 4 + 250W
    S/N Ratio (IHF A Weighted)(Referenced to rated power): 100dBA
    Frequency Response (+0, -1dB): 10Hz-50kHz
    MOS-FET Power Supply
    DC-DC PWM Power Supply
    Discrete Pre-amp Stage
    Duo-BETA Circuit
    STAR Circuit
    DC Straight
    MultiMode Capability
    Adjustable Crossover
    Input Mode Selector
    Noise Elimination Coil
    Gold-Plated Terminals
    Top Panel Power LED

if i need it i also have a PPI 2150 California edition for the lows

i have a 1 farad cap in the car now
i also have another 1.5 farad cap if needed

    FOR SPEAKERS:
i have 4 Lanzar (old) 5 1/4 drivers with big magnets 9the stickers were all gone when i got them so i can't tell you what model they actually are
    see pics

2X lanzar (old) titanium dome tweeters healthy sized magnets on them too
again no idea what model. see pics this is for my rear premium "pods" along with 2 of the above mentioned lanzar drivers and factory (lanzar) cross over networks (rear channel)

2X cerwin vega (old) poly dome tweeters for the stock door tweeter location. (see pics) running these along with the other 2 lanzar 5 1/4 drivers as my front channel

for a driver i have an old ORION Cobalt 12" DVC driver. i am putting this in a sealed box with 2 cubic feet of air space and it is fireing through a rectangular hole that the PO had cut in the deck and sheet metal.

    OK!
now this system was in the car before, but running stock premium front and rear channels and the cobalt in a different enclosure with the 1 farad cap and the alpine V-12 running the driver and front and rear channels

now that i have upgraded the front and rear channels, can i still run it in the same configuration with just the Alpine V-12?

do i need to run the Alpine to the front and rear and ADD the PPI 2150 for just the sub, bridged?

if i need to run both amps do i need a cross over or can/does the deck do that since it has 4 sets of RCA's coming out of the back?

i will be running all new large gauge speaker wire through out the car for this too..

    LUKE HELP!

    Greg

      Hey Greg.

OK, so see if you can find an Audiocontrol 6XS.

You can feed it 1,2 or 3 pair of RCAs and get

Front tweets, front mids, rear mids and highs, then subwoofer outputs...so you would use the Alpine on the fronts, the smaller 2 channel on rear, and whatever beast you have on bass.

So with what you have as a woofer, you likely won't be able to bridge that amp, assuming it is a 2 channel. A 2 ohm load is gonna heat it up really bad...

ok i am a little lost.

the alpine is a 4 channel, right? or is it a 5 (front/rear/and sub output)?

run the front and rear through the alpine V-12

then the sub to the PPI 2150 in stereo, or mono or bridged

don't i need a cross over if i am running multiple amps?

sorry, i have been out of the stereo end for a while

EDIT. ok the audiocontrol IS a CROSSOVER

          AAAAAND
with the 6xs should i run bass coils on the sub?
since it is DVC do i run 1 or 2 of them?

with this crossover ^^ should i NOT run the crossovers that came with the seperates?

ultimately, if i could just run the 1 alpine and not spend anymore $ on stuff that would be great!
if it is not enough power i can always add on later as i need to and $$ lets me

OK, so I now have a few minutes to hack on the keyboard.

So you wanna make a decent sounding car with the 5 channel Alpine? OK, so IIRC, the sub channel is OK with a 2 ohm load, so your sub should do just fine in Parallel.

You could easily use the other 4 channels for mids/highs...especially easy if you have a set of passive crossovers that will accept "BiAmp" inputs, thus you would have seperate power for the mids and tweets.

You could also find a deck that has true 3 way outputs and adjustablilty for the internal crossovers, (Mostly Alpine) or use an external crossover.

The only reason you can't use the crossovers on the 5 channel is because there is no "bandpass" crossover for the midrange...but if you are OK with a pretty aggressive midrange, you could run the mids totally fullrange (highpassed, of course), which might actually sound pretty good in an E30, due to the shitty front speaker placement blasting your ankles.

As far as the tweeters, you want to see a crossover point about 5Khz @18db/oct. If you were to want a lower crossover point, you need a steeper slope, but those little tweeters will not handle any power if you go below about 3200Hz @24db/oct. Once again, that would make for an incredibly aggressive midrange, so if you were to run the mids as high pass only, plus the tweeters low like that...well, I would say hard rock only, basically.

So hey, I hope that answered at least some of your questions.

                    Luke
