    Stock Radio Removal

I need to remove my stock radio so I can get the serial off the back to get the code. The stereo is very loose on the left side, but it won't pull out. The right side is pretty tight. After opening the flaps on the sides I see brass threads but it looks like the screws are missing. Anyone run into this problem? I don't want to damage the unit, as I'm keeping it, and I don't really know if I should just pull harder or if it's common for it to 'catch' on something and there's a trick.

Joey, if those brass screws are gone, someone hath fuk'd your radio.

Yank harder. Break not thy dash bezel!

Nooooo! Damn. Should I remove the dash bezel to make it easier?

If I were to take it to the dealer to get the code, I've heard some provide the service for free. Does that mean they'd do the hard work for me? :D :D

Can we get some pictures? Are you sure you unscrewed both sides?

I'll try to get some pics today. When I pop open those little black tabs I see brass inserts with empty threads, like the screws would thread into them. Definitely no screws :(

Allen wrench should work to loosen the brass "screw" or is that missing completely?

You might be able to get a radio code using your VIN if it is the original radio.

              2 mm allen wrench specifically.

Actually, the screws are 5-side security screws. You might be able to get them out with an allen, but good luck.

The dealer should be able to look up the code based off your VIN, assuming it is the original radio.

Yeah those screws are missing completely. I'll give them a call and see if they can look it up by the VIN, since it is the original radio.

I've used an Allen Wrench, but a Torx bit will also work.

If they haven't been stripped, a small flathead screwdriver will also work, but the soft brass and incorrect tool to remove don't make a good combination.

The 5 sided wrench is about $20.00 bux from BavAuto

What I can't see is how/why someone would remove the brass screws that hold the stock HU in place?

It seems that if it wasn't present, the HU wouldn't be able to be secured in place.
