What are the specs on the Type R sub? Its DVC, so how many ohms per coil?

If you are running it as <2OHM load it is most likely just the amp section that is causing the overheating. Disconnect your sub wire from the amp, and test the resistance at the 2 wires that were just connected to the amp. Let us know what the resistance is.

Jordan, i really dont mean to sound like a super-noob, but how do i test the resistance?

sorry if i am frustrating you, but everyone has to learn sometime.

      thanks for the help

        You need a multimeter.

If you get the specs on the sub and the amp, one of us can probably tell you if you're running too low of impedence off of the amp. Just copy and paste the specs.

Ken, why do clueless people do their own installs when it is clear to everyone they have no idea what they are doing?

I like to learn hands on. I am not sure how else i am going to learn then do the job myself and learn from my mistakes.

but now i am going to sleep. I will get you guys all the indepth specs on the amp and the sub tomorrow afternoon.

btw jordan, i got your CD today and it looks good.

            thanks

              Beats me...
If I had just dropped money on some equipment, I sure as hell woudn't be installing it if I had no clue what I was doing..

Oh come on guys we all started somewhere.

Of course reading instructions and message boards and the like would have helped before the installation.

                Sold it.

Its kind of hard to do that when for all my equipment i paid $1000 and had an estimate to install it for $600. i rather make mistakes and take forever to install it properly then pay that much from a day worth of work.

                  ok, goodnight

Better hope you have the dual 2 wired in series. I doubt the sub channel can handle a 2 ohm load (dual 4 in parallel) without external fans.

ok now for the pictures, i took a lot of pictures, and excuse the bad quality as I am using my sony camcorder to take the pics. I ordered a canon S70 a few days ago.

this probably makes no difference, but this is my headunit, nakamichi CD-45z

In that little corner, you can see the rca's/speaker cable going up and through the cable hole? on the driverside of the back seat.

Can't really see in the pictures, but is it wired series?

If it's wired series, it would be 8 ohm, and I would probably say that gains are too high (trying to turn up the quiet woofer).

Either way, parallel or series, it's probably a bad idea for a single sub setup off that amp.

your dual 4 ohm can be wired to either 8 ohm or 2 ohm, a dual 2 ohm could be wired in series for a 4 ohm load.

Your amp has no specs for a 2 ohm load, so I'm guessing it's not designed to be run at 2 ohms.

My suggestion would be to try and trade your dual 4 type R for a dual 2 type r (or something better).

Your sub looks like it's hooked up in series. You should have the speaker wire going from the amp into one voice coil, and then that voice coil should be in parallel with the other vc in the sub.

Do the Type-Rs really have the negative terminals of both vc's on one side of the sub and then both positives on the other side?

Ok ic. i'll see if i can trade the sub, but i would like to keep this one because if i were to change subs, i would get two 8's

would it be fine if i just isntalled some fans to cool down the amp?
