    Infinite Baffle in e30?

Has anybody tried Infinite baffle set up in e30 utilizing rear firewall instead of rear shelf? Firing into rear seat's back, no armrest either. Your thoughts on this?

    Thanks.

I kinda sorta did one. I would call it more free-air, since I didn't plug all of the holes in the trunk. Sounds good with my setup, but I have a 10" sub made to do it that can do the needed excursion with the needed power.
Notice the clamp that allows easy removal. I designed it back before I had a rack for the snowboard. It has been in for about a year and a half now, and is now on a different (non-shitty) amp.

Pictures of the Blaupunk mounted please.

I meant firing into the seat's back.

There she is!. It fits well and I realize I pump more power to the sub than I thought.

ID max makes a good IB setup
There was a recent install that utilized a ported JL sub facing the seatback, but had not armrest.
He took out a good portion of the padding in the seat back. Worked well for him, but did have a little to much vinyl flapping noise when it hit hard.

netcsk, Panasonic still working on bringing a sub out like the one you have for an IB setup?

I have said it before, i am sure I will say it again: IB installs NEED 4 8" woofers.

They MUST have a Qts over .5, and a Fs about 30hz.

Give them some power and you will be amazed.

Of course, a single 10 in a box will kill them, but what the fuck, right?

                    e30 specific? Lack of room?

No, but damn near every install I have done with IB sounds pale in comparison to the 4 8" setup.

You get some level of mechanical coupling with 4 woofers that you just can't beat. Typically, you will have as much as 12db higher sensitivity, with basically no loss in clarity, except for a bit of "time smear" caused by having more than one cone moving, thus different time paths to your earballs. Not terribly critical at low frequencies, but audible nonetheless.

IB woofers don't have the natural rise in resonant frequency that enclosed woofers get, so a fairly high Fs is pretty much a necessity, or the cone will get totally out of control.

plus, the easiest way to get a higher Fs is a lighter cone...low moving mass FTW!

The high Qts basically means you will have some chance of having decent efficiency, as the ultra low resonance of an IB setup kinda shoots efficiency in the foot.

there are so many compromises in designing car audio crap...the best we get is absolute shit compared to the real world. oh well, I still love this shit!
