    Fuel cooling system

I swapped out my engine bay fuel lines today and my car, being an early model 6/87 build, is supposed to have the fuel cooling system, but it only has the two hoses going to the fuel rail and then back from the fuel pressure regulator. Realoem shows the diagram and that my car came with it, but realoem hasn't always been right.

Was there a fuel cooling system delete which was cabrio specific? Because people in warm weather might be driving the car with the top down and no A/C, rendering the system pointless?

If you drive in an actual desert the fuel cooler is nice to have.

ive had more e30's than i can shake a stick at. cabrios, coupes, sedans, ix's and an m3. not one of them had a fuel cooler. i do have an ix with a power steering cooler. i thought that was weird.

anyway, a fuel cooler is pointless on this car. i would concentrate on important stuff like what beer you plan to drink next.

Right now I've got a few Molsons but after that, who knows. Maybe something Japanese.

Its not like I need my gas ice cold. I'd like to learn everything I can about the car. It's hard getting into the heads of bmw engineers from three decades ago and tracking stuff down can be weird sometimes

The fuel cooler was a one year only thing. And that's 1987 as you can tell.

I've only ever seen one in an '87.

What the hell is the point/purpose of them? And why were they only around for 1 year? "fuel cooler" sounds like muffler bearings or headlight fluid...

The fuel cooler routed the return fuel line through the air conditioner "cold" line to reduce the temperature of the fuel going back to the tank.

Maybe somewhere back in time fuel needed to be cooler to prevent potential vapor lock problems (although I've never heard of vapor lock issues on a fuel injected car), but it would have to get awfully hot outside and the air conditioner would have to be operational in order to get any benefit.

That being said, I have two sets that were removed from my cars when I redid the fuel lines. I'm asking $350 shipped per set for this rather rare and valuable OEM BMW accessory item.

Right - in cars without A/C, there'd be no point. And in a convertible where you'd have the top down and A/C off, there'd be no point. It might have been an option, as my 1987 definitely does not have one. Of course, the lines could have been replaced and the unit removed years ago

I manage to vapor lock our LeMons e30, but that's because the muffler fell off and was spraying hot exhaust directly at the fuel tank :eeek:

my '87 had it. I removed it all when I swapped in the S50. As far as I can tell I haven't boiled any fuel yet....
