I have a 318iS and the fuel gauge wasn't accurate because it would only utilize the second half of the gauge.
The needle would be sitting at 1/2 when the tank was almost empty and full was still full. The RPM also had issues as it would show the RPM 1-2,000 RPMs bellow what is should be.
It turns out the gauge cluster was changed by the previous owner because the speedometer was not working on the original.
Turns out the cluster in my car was from a 6 cylinder E30, and the only thing I had to change was the coding plug.
So I made this video showing the difference when using a 325 cluster in a 318iS, and then installing the correct coding plug.
Maybe someone will find this video helpful, because I could not find much information on this problem.
