    Diameter of 325e exhaust pipe?

I'm planning for my new exhaust and was curious as to the stock size of the pipe after the Y pipe? I am picking up the car in a few days and would like to do the exhaust the same day. I plan on using the stock manifolds and running a single pipe into a high flow cat then continue single pipe to a magnaflow muffler, just wondering if it's 2", 2.25" or 2.5" piping.

    Thanks for you time,

    Hi! Welcome to the Club!

The stock exhaust pipe on the 325e is 2.25". Hope this helps, let us know if you have any more questions we can help you with. Good luck with the car.

Hey thanks a lot for the reply, I was looking everywhere for a simple answer and couldn't find it anywhere. I'll be picking up the exhaust components this weekend and hope to have it all done by Sunday.

Thanks again for the warm welcome helpful information.

          Correction.......it actually 2"

That guy who said it was 2.25" was wrong, at least in my case the exhaust piping is 2" after the Y-Pipe. I ended up having to get an adapter to match all the 2.25" parts I bought.

I wanted to update this with the correct information in case someone found it and made the same mistake I did.

I was trying to find the diameter of the stock 325e exhaust pipe before I bought the car. I had found a post somewhere that indicated it was 2.25". I went ahead and ordered 2.25" catalyst and muffler without actually verifying what I read, that proved to be a mistake. When I actually got the car home and went to install the new pieces I realized the error. The exhaust pipe on my '87 325e is actually 2" in diameter after the Y pipe. I had to use a 2" to 2.25" adapter to mate the new section to the old. Not a huge deal but I wanted to clarify.

I have a thread here that shows the exhaust build:

I made the exact same mistake when I ordered the piping for my custom cat back (accidently ordering 2.25"). Basically, my dumb @#$ just measured the pipe coming out of the generic muffler on my car, which was 2.25. Once I actually went to fab the cat-back, and I dropped the stock exhaust, I measured again at the Cat, and yup, it's 2.0".

Anyrate, we made the 2.25" pipe work by just mating a 2.25" flange to the 2.0" flange on the Cat. We had to grind slots in the gasket, but it worked.
