Instead of going OE, might as well upgrade

Just bought my e30, needs a bit of work, the whole exhaust from the manifold to the cat is junk. The muffler is in great shape, looks like it was just replaced. But the other half has 3 poorly welded patches. Won't pass any inspection, the shady guy who I usually get stickers from won't even pass it because it's so loud. So I figure I'm going to want to upgrade the exhaust later so why spend the money on it now. So give me suggestions, I want something that sounds mean, a nice throaty growl. I'll probably keep the stock muffler for now, unless I can find a good deal on an aftermarket one.

E30 is pretty vague in terms of exhaust. What model and year is it?

If there's a hole right after the manifold before the cat, if I straight pipe it, delete the cats, and keep the stock muffler it'll definitely be quieter right? I just need it not to rattle so that I can get a bogus sticker.

No? That would make it considerably just as loud.
And you have an 'e', exhaust work on those cars is a little finicky if you don't like drone.

it will sound better than a gaping hole in the exhaust though right? Looking for a cheap fix so that I can get it on the road without getting pulled over cause my exhaust sounds like shit.

Straight pipe to a muffler would get you pulled over just as fast.
How big of piping are you wanting? Put on a hefty resonator at least.

Just weld a patch over the hole.

There are already multiple poorly done patches that I'd rather just get a new pipe or the actual exhaust, but I can't find an exhaust anywhere. I'd like to spend under 300 bucks on it, what can I do with 300 bucks? I don't mind it loud, just not so loud that cops pull u turns to pull me over for it.
