    m20b25 Stock vs Stromung Exhaust

A while back I replaced by rusting stock muffler with a Stromung exhaust. I picked it based on loving the sound from videos I saw mostly. The car is a 1987 325is with around 170-180k on the engine. Recent maintenance on all fronts, including the fuel filter. My old one was from 1998 haha.

The build quality of the Stromung is top notch with welded on attachments to the top part of the exhaust hangers. Perfect fit and a HELL of a lot lighter than the stock. I should probably post a newer video since I have about 1k miles on the exhaust and it sounds even better now.

That sounds good. Sounds like you have a really noisy engine though. M20 for ya.

It has been loud for as long as I have owned the car. I actually like it cuz it is easy to tell what rpm you're at without looking at the dash.

That's a pretty sweet sounding unit, would like that one or a supersprint as my next muffler. Too bad the last group buy on thesw did not seem to go too well...

That sounds amazing, how much did it cost you?
Also, when's the last time you had your valves adjusted?

The exhaust cost me $610 + $40 for shipping from understeer.com. It took about a month to get to me since they had to build it.

The valve adjustment was last done, about 6855 miles ago by me. I double checked the clearance on all the valves. I checked videos online after I turned the car on initially because of the sound. All I found was that the engine sounds like a sewing machine when the valves are properly adjusted.

The exhaust has a lot of drone between 1500-2000rpms which I've worked on reducing by loosening the exhaust hanger bolts a bit. If I remember, I'll try to get a video tomorrow morning while heading to work.

Sounds good! When were you shifting (RPM) pulling out into traffic leaving your place, to get an idea of how loud it is?

I need to find one of these used. $600 is too much for me right now. That, Supersprint, Eisenmann or Remus.

If you keep looking around they pop up once in awhile, there was actually a B&B Tri-Flow for sale a couple of weeks back

Since the engine was cold, around 3k.

Getting on the highway was around 4.5k. Idle is around 3.1k at 70mph. Getting back on the highway after being on the shoulder, 5k or so.

Getting on the highway after the unfinished road, 4-5k then around 6k just before I shift.

On the back country looking road I was sitting in 3rd around 3.5k going about 45mph.

Left turn into the road before finally parking, around 6k before I put it into neutral.

The video makes the exhaust sound louder than it is in person. Basically above 3.5k it sounds absolutely amazing and it is intoxicating. Hence, my being in higher rpms for no reason at all (back country road). Also downshifting sounds awesome too (when you rev match it haha).

I have another video that I need to splice together that has my driver's side window down.

Finally, my passenger's door card is currently removed while I've been trying to fix my passenger window not going down electronically. It increases exterior noise a bit.
