    Chopping Off Catalytic Converter

I've always done this with my older Cadillacs but this is my first BMW so I wanted to make sure that getting my cat chopped off isn't going to screw with the engine or computer. Will the engine run fine without it or does it have any sensors that the ECU reads from?

Yeah... I did that and had excellent results (mostly from weight loss).

Just make sure you put a resonator of some kind there or things will sound funky. They are already going to sound LOUD. Going under bridges was awesome

If he's still running stock muffler with no cat it would be alright but ya, if it's an aftermarket muffler and no cat, you'll need something there

Would a glass pack work ok as a substitute for the cat?

I do plan on having a custom dual exhaust installed.. should I keep both pipes seperated and have two cat substitutes?

As a resonator, maybe. As a catalytic converter.. no.

Your preference. Some stay 2-into-2, some go 1-into-1.

Not too worried about the Catalytic Converter functionality of a glass pack because there is no emission testing where I live. If it will work as a resonator then everything should be good.

DO a search on galsspack in this forum. I think someone says they did just that (replace cat with glass pack for resonator effect).

                  Good luck with it.

Just a warning, Chattanooga started Emission testing last year, and I've heard either Knoxville or Nashville will be the next city to implement it. They do a visual inspection to make sure a Cat is in place. So you may want to check with the DMV to see when and if Knoxville will be starting it.

On my old custom exhaust I had a glasspack where the cat would be

Nashville and the immediate surrounding counties have been doing emission testing for the past ~10 years. Knox county is wide open, however. Those bastards.

I had heard it was going to go into place in all of TN, I'd still call the DMV in Knoxville to see as no point spending a lot of money on exhuast if you'll have to do it all over again in a year.

I tracked my car over weekend and there was another e 30 w/ a 2.5i and straight pipes( no converter)....he had 2 pipes running into one into a glass pack........it sounds like a race car( it was)...... way too loud for street.....perhaps if you add another gp........
I love sitting down and just driving!

Emission testing was already voted down a couple months ago.

As it is now Nashville is only requiring emission testing on large trucks, vans, and SUVs.

My current idea is to run 2 seperate pipes and have 2 GPs in place of the cat (1 for each pipe) and then 2 seperate Borla or Magnaflow mufflers.
