custom exhaust - make sure you watch them closely

I've been complaining a bit that my S50 with Vibrant mufflers was too loud. I swore up and down that it had an exhaust leak but could never find one. Well tonight I got so aggravated with it, I decided to pull my headers out and look as it was driving my crazy. I found this on the top part of the exhaust, next to the floorpan. I ended up pulling the headers and all of the exhaust off. Most of the welds are crappy, I'm taking it back up there in pieces so they can weld it back up properly. The flanges were welded on but not flush to the ends of tubing so there weren't any flush seals at the flanges?!?!?! So I took the grinder to each flange and ground each one down so the gasket will actually seal. What a crock!!!!

That doesn't look like they used stainless MIG wire, either. If you had any stainless, it's effectively ruined. Nice hack job.

Another option is taking the car to an exhaust shop where they know what they're doing. ;)

Any mechanic or automotive related tech does not like you right there watching over them, TRUST ME.

It must be something with exhaust shops in the Carolinas because my cat delete pipe looked similar. They didn't even take the exhaust off the car..... They were trying to weld around the top with the car on a lift, them standing on a cinder block and peeking between pipe and floor pan to attempt to get a good seal. And then they had me jump in the car, turn it on, they felt for leaks and proceded to weld where they felt air coming out. Afterwards they told me if it still had a leak. To use JB weld. WTF?

Sounds about par up my way too. Buddy of mine paid a shop to put new headers on his 01 mustang GT and to use the locking hardware he had when they did so they wouldn't loosen up and leak. He got the car back with all but two of the locking bolts still in the box.
I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.

wait, and you walked out paying for that service. I would tell them to go back and securely weld my shit. otherwise im not paying for a half ass job. Ive had to tell a shop that before. Dont make it look like your looking over their shoulder tho. I walked outside on a phone call. walked back and forth by the garage doors and one time I saw someone taking a shortcut with my car and when it was time to pay I respectfully said my piece. 20% off for it.
If i saw someone doing this with my exhaust I woulda said, hey man take my exhaust out so you can get a good weld across the top please.
m20 is plenty. im simply a drifter.

Charlotte has some descent exhaust shops. Just had work done this morning and I dont have bird shit welds like that

Sorry to see it but I would figure you would have checked the welds once the car came off the rack.....

                            I would have/did
