M42 Muffler Options

So there is a lot of information out there! I've listened to a ton of great sounding exhaust system and non-stock mufflers, but I still haven't gotten any solid ideas of what works well.

Anyone got any suggestions for a solid muffler to replace the stock one on a '91 318is?

Of course performance is most important, I want a muffler that will work well with the stock system and give it a little more free-flow.

Sound-wise, don't want it to sound like a fucking ricer... The stock exhaust sounds pretty good but a little deeper growl would be amazing.

Anyways any input would be great, also cost is a big factor, don't want to spend over 100$ on a muffler (not including install).

I just had a Dynomax Super Turbo 17731 welded on, my stock muffler had rusted completely free of the rest of the exhaust. Cheap, quiet, and sounds good. Can't vouch for any performance increase though, as I never drove the car with the stock muffler actually in place. Was $46 on amazon with free shipping.

If I were to do it again, and I probably will, I'll use 2 1/4 tubing, Perforated tube resonator after the cat and maybe the same rear muffler I have now in 2 1/4 instead of 2 1/2.

So isn't the stock 318is tubing 2.25"?

Read your thread, good infos but are you saying that you would do a muffler with a 2.25" inlet/outlet instead of 2.5"?

I will probably just go with the Dynomax Super Turbo, that has always gotten good reviews unless someone can say differently.

If its anything like the Summit Super Turbo it will be too loud. The M42 has a pretty sharp loud rasp that's hard to get a handle on.

The stock system has a few pinches in it and just doesn't flow that well from what I have read. I have never had one on my car so I can't compare to what I have.

Good fit and quiet would be nice.

With all I've messed with, I could have bought a SuperSprint.

I put a Borla pro xs on my car last month and it sounds good, $25 from pick n pull. Sounds like the magnaflow on my M3.

Im running a stock cat and a Dynomax super turbo.

I HIGHLY reccomend keeping a resonator. I just had a strait pipe from the cat
To the muffler. Alot of rasp and its pretty loud :/.

Supersprint sounds a bit deeper than stock, nothing wild and not ricer at all. I put it on 10 years ago and its holding up very well.

I've got some kind of HFC from the previous owner and had a dyna-max muffler welded in. Sounds good but I've never been a fan of chambered muffler sounds. It's not bad but I'd love a deeper tone.

Damn I dig that Borla Pro XS. Found it for 110$, as of now I'll be going with that when I have the money (Summer fun!)

Ebay, I just googled it man, a little cheaper then Summit's 130$ish
