Is using the M42 exhaust with an S50 a bad idea?

I just picked up my S50 swapped 91 318is from the shop last night and the exhaust set-up they went with was to use the OBD1 S50 manifold, some custom work to attach to the stock M42 exhaust and its all stock 318 mid and rear.

How bad of an idea is this and how much is it hampering performance/drivability?

They seemed like this was perfectly normal but I'd like 3rd party confirmation.

    Thanks!

Oh, and when I say complete M42 exhaust I mean the cat as well.

Would you think it would be a restriction trying to put 3.0l's of exhaust in a pipe engineered for 1.8l's?

Exactly, that's what I was thinking, it made sense to me but the shop seemed to think it was ok. I'm going to see if I can get an m52/s52 take off from a club member l

          50% smaller. 318i M42 exhaust is 2-1/4". E36 M3 S52 exhaust is dual 2-1/4".
