didnt know where to put this, so here goes

i got a new catalytic converter put on my 87 325i, i went to a muffler shop to see how much a custom cat back exhaust would be and we get under and see that the mechanic who put the cat in reduced the exhaust to 1.5 inches a for a bout a foot before and after the catalytic converter in order to make it fit i beleive. what would you guys do in this situation? i mean i spent like 500 on this, and it looks like he has the wrong catalytic converter there. is there usually a part number i can look for to see if that is the proper converter. if so does anyone know the part number i do need? this way i can go back to him and show him he messed up.
also, what are the possible side effects to this if any?
    thanks for any help guys

For future reference, there's an exhaust section that this would probably fit in. Part number I found is 11761716743 on realoem.com. I think the stock exhaust ID is 1.75" but with a stock motor I don't think the change will choke it much. More knowledgeable people feel free to correct me though.
