    exhaust for m42

im looking for a new muffler for my m42. i would go custom exhaust with the muffler but im broke and just need a muffler that wont sound like a 400lb bumble bee.

also does anyone have part numbers for the bushings for the suspension, ill be on spring break next week and wanna put in an order for them asap so i can keep myself occupied for a week.

just get a 2.25 or 2.5" magnaflow, dynomax, whatever generic muffler. You can get them all day long for less than $50, and have any decent muffler shop install it for about the same price. With the stock cat and resonator in place, it most likely wont sound bad at all.

Just go to www.summitracing.com and find "universal exhausts" that have a 2.25" inlet and an offset inlet and outlet. It should fit just fine in your car. Do some basic measurements under your car to see how it will fit. It will be short, but you can add a tip if you feel like it. I have the dynomax universal muffler, it's a little louder than I would like but it's not obnoxiously loud.

well considering you have a 4cylinder motor, its not going to sound like a v8 ever, so your best bet is to not make it loud as hell.

He speaks the truth, but this doesn't mean a 4cyl can't sound nice. For example, the e30m3.

when i bought my 318is the previous owner had a Ractive muffler or some shit like that installed...let me tell you that sounded like a piece of shit. It had some points in the power band that sounded alright, but it was really loud and just didn't sound the part. It had to go right away

                  e9nine is right, the E30 M3 is one mean sounding 4-banger :)

944s/951s don't sound all that bad either. :)

i had a 50 serries on for 3 years, it didn't sound bad at idle, or high revs. from about 1500-3500 it sounded kinda like ass. i took it off last week and put a straight pipe on, and i just ordered a dynomax muffler in...

Im running a Stebro cat-back. Fitment left a bit to be desired, tone however, is awesome.

I plan on getting a standard generic magnaflow in the next couple months. My 15 year old stock muffler is on its last legs.

I also have a Stebro cat-back system on my 318is, however I had them mate a 325 dual outlet muffler onto the rear of it. Looks great, sounds amazing but like you said fitment was questionable...centerpipe section of mine needs to be rotated about 10 degrees from where it is to avoid hitting rear subframe.
