    Exhaust Confusion

Ok I've been doing a lot of reading, too much reading for my own good. I'm picking up a set of headers for the m20 with the downtube that's 2 outlets. I know I want that for sure, now I don't know what a need after that. I don't want straight pipes cause that's obnoxious, but do I do headers without a car into a muffler. Or headers into only a cat no muffler or headers into a car and a muffler. Then everyone's like you need back pressure then others say you don't so I'm confused. I just want to open it up a bit. Make it sound louder and enjoy daily driving it. Any help/opinions are greatly appreciated.

Headers in to a cat without a muffler is going to sound terrible. You need a nice muffler to get that nice tone. If it were me I'd go to an exhaust shop and have it all custom made. Merge it in to single 2.5" piping after the headers. If you run no cat it will be a lot harder to keep the car quiet. I'd recommend going with some sort of center muffler.

Why is it preferred in the E30 community to run single exhaust?

I can only answer for myself on this one. It's simpler, cheaper, and more than adequate.

I'm going to run a Borla mid muffler/resonator and a Vibrant at the back.. There's a YouTube video of it... Sounds awesome. I don't remember the model names on either tho.. I'd have to look

Yeah I planned on a shop and doing it all custom. So are you saying a center muffler and a muffler at the end or just a center muffler and dump it wherever?

I will be when I do my B25/S50 swap. The video is of an S50 swapped E30, but I've heard a Vibrant on an M20, it doesn't sound much different. I'll try to find the video for you.

Scorpion stainless steel performance exhaust system from Bavarian Autosport. Nice piece @ $419, easy install. The reason two smaller pipes is clearance under the rear subframe. I have killed two single systems in 3 yrs.

                    Two mufflers.

You need to find a better exhaust shop. I have single 3" on my M-Tech and literally never scrape.

Ok so something like a glass pack? And then a standard muffler at the end of the system?

I have a glass pack on my car right now. Get something else. It's cheap for a reason.

There's the video I was talking about.
