    O2 and Catalytic Converter Questions

    Hey,
Just got me a 1989 RHD 325i Mtech II, and she is a beauty! Took her to get safety and emissions done for registration out here in Utah, and failed emissions. After scouring the net and forums for a week now, I had a chance to check out under the car. From what I could see it looks like it has a mid muffler, not a catalytic converter. So that is probably problem #1. I also read that a faulty O2 sensor could cause the car to cause emissions problems. So I ordered up an O2 sensor and went to install it today. To my surprise there is no O2 sensor bung. I did check for the plug for the wiring and it is there, but there is no sensor installed.

So my questions are as follows:
    1) Should I just get the Cat and see if that solves my problem?
    2) Should I have a bung installed for the O2 sensor?
    3) Both?
    4) Would installing an O2 sensor on a car that has been running without and is most likely tuned that way a good/bad idea?

Any input or thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. I know I read somewhere that Euros didn't get Cats until something like '91. Don't know if that is true, but could explain a lot to me. I'm not too worried about it, just would like the knowledge base here to help guide me down the road. Thanks in advance for your input!:thank you:

I can post up a pic of my emissions slip on Monday if that would help.
