The PO of my car installed a shitty exhaust with no cat. The midpipe rusted out so I went to a shop recommended by a few friends and and the shop says they won't touch it unless they install a cat. This is in CT where my car doesn't have to pass emissions. The shop owner said even though it doesn't need to meet emissions, the car has to have everything functional etc, including the emissions system. Is the guy bullshitting me? His price was 180 for a 2.5 inch midpipe and 120 for a cat. I've read around and prices seem to be all over the place. Thanks

In either case, after 25 years the DMV stops sending you emissions testing requirements. I just registered an 87 vert from out of state and I just had to get the VIN checked.
The price really isn't bad for a new cat and midpipe in CT. If you don't want a cat try a local muffler only shop - a quick Google search by you brings up Pop's muffler.
