What do you say if you get stopped?

I just got stopped for "loud exhaust" on the way home from work tonight. The cop was nice and female so I flirted as best I could and bullshitted my way out of a ticket (boy, working at a BMW mechanic has it's advantages at times...) The only problem is, it's a small area here and people talk so I doubt I'll be able to use the same "yeah, that just started doing that the other day, we're going to throw it up on the lift tomorrow and see what's up" more then a few times before someone calls me on it. What are some things you guys have said that have worked and gotten you off without a ticket?

    Thanks!
    Brendan

Don't call the Canucks at the border crossings "Mount-Mes" - they don't take a liking to that.

Oh boy have I had some run-ins with them, although it was more so the US side when I was coming HOME that would give me shit. I was playing in a band and went through the same crossing a few times a week so eventually it got to the point of:
"Hi Brendan, how was you show?"
      "Good, thanks."
"You buy anything while you were in canada, gifts for your family?"
      "Nope."
"Well that's too bad for your family then. Welcome back to the US and have a safe drive."

I got pulled over for loud exhaust a few weeks ago. The officer asked me if i had a hole in it. I was like no, it's only a few mounths old but i do got a set of glass packs on it. Of coarse he seen i was from out of state, and he asked me were i lived and i told him. I'm only 4 miles from state line. He took my licsence and went back to his car and sat there for a while, then came running up and handed me a warning and told me to be safe. Then ran back to his car and sat there till i drove off. I also had a 70 Dodge Dart with a built 360. I ran it into town with open headers and a cop heard me pull in to a parking lot. He told me that thing sounds really mean. I never really had trouble with cops for my exhaust on any of my cars, they seem to like the tinted window's more.

I was thinking of pulling the race card on her: "Is you just hatin' me 'cause I'm black?" But she didn't look like an Ali G fan...

NH has no limitations on exhaust noise.
You are being pulled over so they can look for other items to cite you for.

They CANNOT ticket you for exhaust noise, and if they do, take it to court and it will be thrown out. I cant remember the exact legal section/charter/etc. that covers this, but its 100% legit.

Cool, I thought that was the deal. Well I have no front plate, clear turn signals, and highly illegal headlights so getting yelled at for a loud exhaust is fine by me.

                Why are your headlights illegal?

I have euro elips with Xtec Race HIDs. I'm actually not sure there are any actual laws in this state, but the phrase "for off-road use only" appeared quite a few times on the packaging...

I've been nabbed numerous times for "Excessive Exhaust Noise" violations in NY. I've only ever gotten out of it once, and the trooper gave me a "Fix-It ticket" that time. I used the, "Yeah, I'm sorry officer, I don't know what's happening, but it's been getting louder and louder the last few weeks, so I decided to make an appointment for the car at my local shop to see if it's got a hole in the exhaust someplace. I haven't been able to look for it yet, but if you want to, go ahead and take a look for yourself. The appointment is for tomorrow morning....." I had my "guy" at the local garage sign off on the "repairs", and mailed in the ticket within 24 hours.

The other times the cops said something to the effect of this, "Look, I know your car has had some serious work done to it, and if I wanted to, I could tear this thing apart and give you tickets from front to back, but I'm only going to give you a ticket for Excessive Exhaust. I suggest you not fight it in court, or we can have the judge impound your car while we look it over." It's a $75 charge and a $35 sur-charge and no points on my license, what am I going to say to that? "Thank you officer, have a nice day." that's what.

I've gotten so used to it that by now, when the cop comes to the door and asks me, "Do you know why I pulled you over?", I say, "Yes sir, NYS VTL code section 375, sub-section 31, paragraph's A and B. I'll wait while you write the ticket."

round here cops cant pull you over cause they think your car fails inspection, thats the job of the inspection station

you can drive around with loud exhaust, clear turnsignals, no front plate (we dont have those), lots of lift, illegal tint, etc... as long as its legal come inspection time

then again i havent really tested it but we have the usual loud cars all over the place, ricers trucks, my friend drove around his jeep with just headers for a little while

Well, they can in NYS. All they have to do is see an aftermarket ________ and they have the ability to pull you over for whatever they see fit. The NYS DMV VTL specifically states what can and can't be done to any road car that sees NYS roads. Things like:

                          Illegal tint
                          HID's
                          Loud Exhaust
                          Neon (ick anyway)
                          Loud stereos
                          Aftermarket Guage pods
Tires that stick out of your fender wells
                          No front plate
                          etc...

Are considered an illegal modification and are cosidered a ticket-able offense. If you use the VTL, and can prove through a technicality that they couldn't ticket your car, then you can beat the system, otherwise, you're screwed.

I hate NY. I still have some unpaid parking tickets from NYC that I refuse to pay. Mass can be difficult, but I don't have any problems whatsoever. I give a lot back to the community, and know the entire police dept, selectmen, etc. So, there are never any problems, and if there are, they get taken care of. :)
