    NH E30 owners

So I recently bought a 1990 Chevy truck for hauling from a speed-shop owner that had welded together an exhaust from what looks like spare stainless pipes he had laying around the shop. The thing has what looks to be a glass-pack and a resonator in-line and no catalytic converter. He wasn't sure if it would be inspectable without a cat so I did some digging and found this:

According to NH code Saf-C 3200 "any vehicle 1980 or newer must have a converter" and "OBD system inspection applies to 1996 and newer light duty gas vehicles and light duty gas trucks"

I know the guy who inspected the E30 said they didn't do "much" so far as emmissions goes on old cars but having just moved from MA I figured they must check for something. So my question is, have any of you NH E30 owners gutted your catalytic converters and welded a test-pipe straight though? I know you aren't going to pick up any real power from doing so but it would sure as hell beat buying a new converter and every little bit helps right?

All that they'll do is look under it to see if there is a cat on it. So i'd just gut it or gut it and run a pipe through it.

I'm from NH and I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to do a custom single 2.5" setup and I originally was going to do the straight pipe through a gutted cat. But after thinking about it, I decided to just buy a cheap ass 2.5" high flow cat off ebay ($45 shipped) and use it. I think it is just easier to do that then gut a cat and weld a pipe through it.

good choice. i had a high flow cat on my "e", and i liked it personally. you honestly dont gain much of anything w/ a gutted cat, other than creating more pollution. if you car is setup REAL nicely, then thats a different story, but daily drivers arent a big deal at all
