length that will fit? a foot will be fine right? or want longer?

2.5" tubing all the way, and a good smooth Y-pipe after the exhaust manifolds. http://www.performance-curve.com/bro...--Dual-2-.html or better?

thanks for the input. leaky rusted stock exhaust is no good anymore

I'd go with muffler number 1 and resonator number 2.

Are you going for raucous inline six noises? Because if you go with #1 you will get a LOT of volume. It has a fairly small can. Also, the Flowmaster Hushpower is a fairly small volume resonator. I'm fairly certain a 22" long can will fit.

maybe, not sure. what about this? http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=848
that's larger but what would be too large?

and where is a longer magnaflow/flowmaster similar type long resonator or straight muffler that could be used.

but the general idea is on the right path, correct?

Yep, you're definitely on the right track. I'm no exhaust expert, I've only made one exhaust so far and it is LOUD. However, the aftermarket cans are designed to be loud, so the smaller you go, the louder it's going to be.

Magnaflow has a whole lineup of looong round 4" can mufflers that could do a good job as a resonator. This looks pretty good:

ahhh. didn't see the link at the top for round satin stainless mufflers. awesome, cheers mate. with a muffler, resonator and y-pipe all from magnaflow it should be pretty cheap and easy to replace my farty can.

Ya know, I like the look of the Flowmaster Y-collector better. The Magnaflow piece looks like a stamped piece of metal, whereas the Flowmaster is a true welded merge pipe. It's like $42.

I just wanted to check the update on what you are doing or have done with your exhaust. I have a 325i as well and am at a crossroads as to what to do about an exhaust....

I'm looking to do something similar on my M20B25 powered track car. I've got a set of Hartge long-tube headers (2X 3-into-1). I want to combine them into a single 2.5" exhaust line. Trying to figure out where along the line to place the Y-pipe.
