I have read that one shouldnt use more than 2.25" piping on the 318is. What would be the difference between using 2.25" and 2.5" piping?

That's what the guy at the exhaust shop recommended/did. I don't know if I've lost power or gained power. Only thing I can think of that would be pad by using 2.5" piping is not enough back pressure. Can anyone verify if this is bad?

It is a 1.8l after all. I thought it wasn't too bad. It isn't too raspy though, which was surprising. It is raspy when I'm warming up the car though. I don't mind.

Yea, i miss my M42.... Its hard to get exhaust right on such a small engine.

Yeah, mine sounded similar with the old borla setup on it. Never liked the sound but never could find a better solution.

With the 2.5 exhaust basically there's a decrease in backpressure which can help the motor run better to a certain extent. Less backpressure also means less torque so it is a fine line. In the 24valve section there is a bunch of info on that sort of stuff if your more interested.

You don't think there is too much though? It does still have a cat. It is high-flow, but would still create back pressure correct?

                      Sounds good.

Ive got a similar setup with 2.25" piping and no cat.
Its loud and raspy but lightweight.

At highway speeds you'll really feel those new parts.

Do you have a chip yet?

No but I was looking into it. That and suspension is next on the list. What sort of chip do you recommend.

Mark D chip all the way. I have the 93 octane version.

I also have a magnaflow exhaust and cat, along with some crappo resonator. 2.25" piping. I have the same cold-engine and exhaust rasp that most M42s have, but there is 0 rasp once it warms up.

Nice setup. Pretty much the same as I have on my 95 318i M42.....

I have a Magnaflow Highflow cat, 20" glasspack, and Magnaflow muffler. It's pretty loud, it's raspy, but sounds extremely badass inside the car and it is lighter than that heavy stock box. What can you really expect from a 1.8L?

I love mine! Do you have 2.5" piping? I'm starting to think i need to get 2.25" piping.
