    muffler for frugal lifestyle

I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint by consuming less - in other words, I'm broke. My OEM muffler on my '89 325iC is rusted out. The cat-back pipes are probably OK to go for another couple years. I would like to replace just the muffler & not the pipes, so a couple questions:

    1. Is it possible to replace the muffler without welding & still have it not leak?

    2. What cheap muffler(s) will fit the OEM pipes? Mail-order preferred.

Did I mention I'm on a really low budget for this project? Open to all ideas.

    Thanks
